Hokendauqua Trout Unlimited will be offering its beginner’s fly tying course next month. This year, the course is being offered free of charge to all participants.
The course will take place 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays, in January and February, beginning Jan. 6, 2024. Arrive by 8:30 a.m. to sign in. The course is currently held in the cafeteria of Northampton Area Middle School.
For eight consecutive Saturdays, we will instruct on the tying of two different flies each week. Materials and a 108-page manual will be given to each student.
A step-by-step video presentation on the tying of each fly will be shown before the students start tying. Then, an instructor will demonstrate each step. Additionally, more instructors will be on hand to offer personal assistance to those students who request more guidance. With the instructions received, a student should be able to tie almost any fly.
We have had anywhere from 30 to 70 students of all ages.
The sessions will also be incorporated into our veterans service partnership program.
Loaner tool kits will be available to use, or you can bring your own.
Complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate and doughnuts will be available.
A raffle will take place each week. Tying materials, fly fishing rod and reel, tying tools and books are some of the items that will be raffled off. Proceeds will benefit our stream restoration projects.
