Ben Franklin speaks at WHPS event
Whitehall Historical Preservation Society hosted a conversation with Benjamin Franklin, one of our Founding Fathers, Nov. 29 at the Helfrich Springs Grist Mill, 501 Mickley Road, Whitehall. WHPS President Stephanie Tashner hosted the event.
About 25 history buffs attended the interesting encounter with Benjamin Franklin, portrayed by Christopher Black of the Bachmann Players, as he quoted Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and John Locke. After his presentation, Franklin answered attendees’ questions.
Franklin shared a number of stories, including one involving William Parsons, considered the founder of Easton. Parsons requested Franklin’s assistance and aid to withstand any encroachment of Native Americans into Easton. Franklin’s aid reached Easton in time, allowing for the safety and viability of Easton and its residents.
Black is an accomplished Benjamin Franklin re-enactor. The Bachmann Players is a group of locally based amateur historians and actors. They have participated in many venues depicting 18th century history. Recently, they participated in a large July 4 event at the George Taylor House in Catasauqua.
Tashner was excited about the successful and informative meeting. She noted the society is always seeking financial supporters and volunteers to sustain the society’s efforts.
The society began working to preserve the Helfrich Springs Grist Mill. The site also houses a museum and was restored to the point that it is used for the WHPS monthly meetings, special events and tours by appointment. The WHPS is currently working to preserve the Peter Grim Homestead, built in 1864, across the street from the grist mill.
Benjamin Franklin believed people volunteering together in a spirit of cooperation could accomplish great things. He lived this credo and was driven by a strong sense of civic duty. Franklin helped establish libraries, public hospitals, volunteer fire departments, agricultural colleges and more.
