Siggins drops 21 points on Pates
The Parkland High School girls basketball team opened up the 2023-24 regular season portion of its schedule last week with a busy, three-game week. The Trojans started out just the way they had hoped to, winning all three games to head into week two undefeated.
The first two games of the week were in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, as Parkland defeated Allen 69-25 last Wednesday, Dec. 6, in the season and home opener, before taking down Freedom 66-23 on Friday night, also at Parkland. The Trojans then had a nonconference game about 16 hours later and they took care of Cumberland Valley 62-36 on Saturday afternoon. Neither game last week was rather close, as the average margin of victory was 38 points.
Against the Canaries, Parkland jumped out in front 22-8 after the opening quarter and then led 43-15 at halftime to put the game out of reach by the time the teams went to their lock rooms. Three Parkland players finished with game-highs of 16 points, including Talia Zurinskas, Delaney Chilcote and Maddie Siggins. Each of the trio connected from long distance, as Chilcote made three 3-pointers, Zurinskas had two and Siggins one for the team’s total of 10. Addison Fritzinger added to the three-point total, netting three of them and just missing out on double figures in scoring with nine.
It was more of the same in the win over the Patriots as the Trojans went on top by 15 (24-9) following the first quarter and 31 (47-16) at halftime. Siggins tallied a game-best 21 points as she was the lone player in double figures. Eight other players, however, found the scoring column, a season-high. Zurinskas recorded nine points, Chilcote and Fritzinger had seven, Sophie Frank totaled six, Aneri McGalla and Sarah Car added five, Katalyna Canela contributed four and Isabella Hallai rounded out the scoring with two points.
In the victory against Cumberland Valley, Siggins once again led the charge with a season-high 27 points as her team scored 18 of the game’s first 23 points and outscored the Eagles 40-15 in the first half. Zurinskas (14 points) and McGalla (11) also finished in double digits in scoring. Chilcote added eight.
Parkland has another three-game week this week and hit the road for the first time this season. The Trojans were at Whitehall this past Tuesday night and are at Pocono Mountain West on Friday. They will then compete in the Keystone Classic at Conwell Egan against Perkiomen Valley on Saturday.
