SHS girls hope to build on last season’s finish

The Lady Falcon girls basketball team finished last season with a 3-19 record, but the entire season was a learning experience for a young team that had just three seniors on the roster in Angela Bitar (1.6 points per game), Sabrina Ferreras (1.00 PPG) and Hannah Kamp (6.6 PPG).

As players became more comfortable playing together, the team picked up all three of its wins in the latter part of the year after an 0-12 start. The wins came against Colonial League opponents Palisades and Wilson and nonleague opponent Kutztown.

This year’s team has five seniors, but only three of them – Desiree Nales, Ava Smarch and Paige Ziegenfus – got significant playing time as varsity players last winter.

Nales led the team in scoring last season with 7.6 PPG. Other players showed the ability to put up some points but lacked the ability to score consistently. The added varsity experience from last season and their work over the summer will help those players develop consistency for this season.

Sophomore Kendra Morgan put up 16 points in the win over Wilson and averaged just under six points per game for the Falcons in the 2022-23 season. Morgan is one of the players who are likely to bring more scoring to the Salisbury lineup this season.

The Falcons open with a league game against Catasauqua and then have two nonleague games against Notre Dame – East Stroudsburg, and Tamaqua.
