PHS girls seek fourth straight D-11 crown

The Parkland girls swimming and diving team didn’t just win the District 11 title last season. With a pair of freshmen earning gold medals, the Trojans served notice to the Lehigh Valley high school swimming community that they could be dominant for some time to come.

Milla Hahn and Kelsey McPeek both won individual district gold last year, taking first place in the butterfly and breaststroke events, respectively.

Now sophomores, the two returning champs are joined by several other swimmers that swam in districts last year for a team that went 9-0 in the East Penn Conference to earn the league’s regular season title. Parkland followed that with its third straight district title, edging Emmaus 426-409.

The Trojans will have to replace five seniors that graduated from last year’s district team, including 500-yard freestyle champs and 200 free silver medalist Simone Lin.

Madison Roseman, who was part of Parkland district champion medley relay team last year along with Lin, McPeek and Hahn, is one of four seniors on the Parkland rosters this year. Dana Montone, diver Madison Stout and Sophia Cerimele are the teams’ other seniors.

Other Parkland returning district qualifiers include junior Julianne Zaffiro, who placed second in the district 500-yard freestyle last winter, and classmate Mackenzie Platt, along with sophomores Taylor Coombe and Ella Rafeld.

The Trojans will also have 10 freshmen on the roster this season, with five swimmers and five divers in that ninth-grade class.

Second-year head coach Allison McPeek said this year’s team is hardworking and goal-oriented. She hopes to qualify as many swimmers as possible for districts and then have several earn their way to the state championship meet.

“Our goal is to have as many people in districts in as many events as possible so we have options,” said McPeek. “Every swim is going to count.”

Joining McPeek on this year’ Parkland coaching staff are assistants Brittany Reamer, Traci Kinney, Barry Kushner and Bill Platt. Kenrick Smith serves as the team’s strength and conditioning coach. Amy Krakaley coaches Parkland divers along with assistant Tara Slaski.
