Falcons return two D-11 medalists

Salisbury High School swimming has a lot of excitement and promise surrounding both the boys and girls programs. One program has a little bit more proven talent returning, while the other will have to replace a lot more production that graduated from last season.

“We are super excited for the 2023-2024 season,” said head coach Mackenzie Sikora. “Both the girls and boys programs have a lot of young talent that we are hoping continue to grow and get better this season. They all have been training and working very hard in the offseason to be the best that they can be and improve on times from last season.”

The girls program is highlighted and will be led by sophomores Phoebe Ballek and Olivia Amorim.

Amorim earned two medals at the District 11 AA meet last season, winning the 200 individual medley and receiving the bronze for a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle.

Ballek earned a silver medal in the 200 freestyle and just missed on earning her second medal of districts, placing fourth in the 500 freestyle.

The duo both qualified for the state meet and helped the Falcons to an eighth-place finish at districts out of 20 teams with 149 points.

“Our top returners on the girls side are Phoebe Ballek and Olivia Amorim,” Sikora said. “These were the two swimmers who qualified for states last year as freshmen and as they continue to train and improve, we are eager to see how they do this season.”

The Salisbury boys team placed sixth overall out of 20 teams at the district meet last season. Cameron Kubinsky is one of the top returning swimmers this season and he was a district qualifier in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM last year. He also competed in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

But the Falcons will need more production as they lost a number of talented swimmers to graduation following last season.

“One thing we are struggling with is the loss of many of last year’s seniors, especially on the boys team,” said Sikora. “Our key events this year are going to be distance events, as our swimmers tend to thrive in the 500 free. We are excited to see how this season goes and are hopeful for a successful year.”

Salisbury’s season begins next Tuesday with a meet at Blue Mountain High School.
