Freshman Emilio Albanese won the championship of the 107-pound weight class to highlight the Emmaus High School wrestling team’s weekend at the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat Tournament at Williamsport High School.
Albanese was joined by classmate and fellow freshman Teagan Caciolo and junior Jesse Scott as semifinalists and top-four finishers at the meet.
Caciolo placed fourth at the 121-pound weight class and Scott was fourth at 160. Two other Hornet wrestlers placed in their respective weight classes, including sophomore Xayden Sallit, who was seventh at 152, and classmate Jackson Max, who finished eighth at 114.
The Green Hornets, as a team, finished 10th overall out of 25 teams with 100 team points. The event, which was won by Central Mountain, included two other teams from the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference in Easton (third place) and Northampton (fifth place).
Albanese began his day with a pin over Xavier Lutz (Clearfield) in 0:36, followed that up with a tech. fall victory over Jack Gramly (Mifflinburg), 5:45 (15-0) in the quarterfinal round and then earned a decision over Carter Chunko (Saucon Valley), 3-2, in the semifinals before a 10-7 decision over Noah Fenner from Easton.
Emmaus has its home and Eastern Pennsylvania Conference opener on Thursday night when it hosts Pocono Mountain East at Emmaus High School. The Green Hornets then have a tough two-match road stretch at Northampton next Wednesday and then at Easton the following week.
