Swim team sweeps
The Northampton varsity swim team unleashed a tidal wave of victories in their decisive win over the East Stroudsburg South Cavaliers on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the Gwen L. Whildin Natatorium.
The K-Kids showcased their depth and versatility, claiming wins in numerous individual and relay events and leaving the Cavaliers in their wake with a boys team final score of 132–44 and a girls team final of 129-51.
The meet kicked off for the boys team with a thrilling, 200 medley relay, where Northampton’s team of Ryan Frank, Ethan Brobst, Logan Saylor and Nick Isaac dominated the competition, earning a resounding first-place finish. In other relay event news, the girls relay team of Sophia Pina, Gabriella Oswald, Ava Aulisio and Olivia Kuhns secured victory in the 200 freestyle relay.
Individually, Northampton athletes shined brightly. GiGi Esteban captured first place in the girls 200 freestyle, kicking off a string of individual event victories for the girls. Brenna Caley proved to be a force to be reckoned with, claiming victories in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. Gabriella Oswald added another individual win for the K-Kids with her dominant performance in the 100 breaststroke, and Ava Keenan rounded out the impressive individual wins for the girls team with her triumph in the 500 freestyle.
For the boys, Josiah Hippert showcased his versatility with first-place finishes in both the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Logan Saylor continued the winning streak with his victory in the 200 individual medley. Ryan Franke added his name to the list of individual champions with his dominating performances in the 50 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Nate Scheirer rounded out the individual wins for the boys team with his first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
Northampton’s diving team also made a splash, with Isabella Kish, Allison Unangst and Sara Huch claiming the top-three positions in the girls 1-meter diving event. The boys team followed suit, with Andrew Szeplaki, Alex Szeplaki and Samuel Hayes securing the top-three spots in the boys 1-meter dive.
In the final events of the evening, Northampton’s 400 freestyle relay teams continued to dominate, claiming the top-three positions in the boys competition and the top-two in the girls.
Northampton head coach Cullen Mentzell seemed pleased with the early wins this squad has achieved.
“So far the team has performed well this year,” he said. “There are things that we still need to clean up, like starts and turns and finishing races, but overall, I am pleased.”
Mentzell went on to comment about the diverse make-up of his athletes and the impact they have on each other.
“We have a lot of new boys on the team that are making an impact,” he added. “I think they have pushed some of the older swimmers.”
The K-Kids impressive victory against East Stroudsburg South is sure to boost their confidence as they head into a busy schedule this season. Northampton will welcome Allentown Central Catholic on Thursday for their second home meet of the season. The competition kicks off at 4 p.m.
