Freedom looks to make name on wrestling mats
Anthony Marino wants more from Freedom wrestling in his second season in command and he feels confident his team can deliver.
The Pates finished 13-8 last season and finished as the eighth seed entering team districts, but the expectation is for even more this winter.
Freedom has added more coaches to their disposal to hopefully add more of an offensive arsenal to their wrestlers.
“This year we revamped and added a whole new coaching staff with former Easton alum Tyler Greene and former Liberty alum Luke Werner,” said Marino. “Both of these coaches were scoring machines in the competitive days, so we are really looking to start pushing the team a little harder to constantly look to score points.”
This year’s lineup is comprised of returners Tyzair Johnson (So., 114); Logan Charbanu (Sr., 114); John Bodnar (Jr., 121); Anthony Crisafulli (So., 133); Aamire Gaskins (Jr., 133); Alex Salim (Sr., 139); Keenan Ray (Jr., 145); Joey Bodnar (Sr., 152); Ivan Bonilla (Jr., 160); Noah MacIlroy (Jr., 172); Jared Karabinus (Jr., 189); Elliot Black (Jr., 189/215) and Dan Schiffert (So., 285).
Karabinus returns as the leader from last year’s team with 32 wins, coming off a fourth-place finish at districts and regionals.
Newcomers include Ovidious Cuscu (Jr., 106); Nick Lyden (Fr., 127); Dean Herman (Fr., 121/127) and Jaxson Stametz (Fr., 133).
Lyden looks to lead the new wrestlers on the mat, while Marino thinks Johnson, Bodnar, MacIlroy, Schiffert and of course, Karabinus, can anchor the roster.
“Really we are looking to break into the top four this season and take out one of the top teams in District 11 and maybe knock off a team that doesn’t think we should hang with them,” he said. “This team has worked harder than ever with showing up very consistently to preseason and offseason workouts. This group of young men are very hungry to get in the mix and compete and I believe we are going to do it this year.”
The Pates open their EPC schedule on Thursday against Dieruff before heading off to the Del Val Duals on Saturday.
