Council votes on budgets

North Catasauqua Borough Council met Dec. 4 to discuss end-of-year business. The group voted on all budgets for 2024, approving the general funds budget for approximately $2.54 million and the sewer fund budget for approximately $850,000.

Council agreed to advertise the tax millage rate of 16.5%, which will be voted on at the first meeting in January 2024.

Fire Chief Roger Scheirer requested a motion to approve the Civil Service hiring list. The Civil Service Commission held a meeting Oct. 3 to discuss creating a hiring list of entry-level police officers for future open positions. An official notice was posted to the borough’s website Oct. 6, and a physical agility and written test took place Nov. 11. Council agreed to approve the motion.

Scheirer also mentioned an incoming bill of $1,049 for annual inspections that are completed every 90 days on the fire department’s six meters. Treasurer Annette Englert said this would be paid in 2024 and would come out of that budget.

With the end-of-year business completed, council agreed to cancel the second meeting in December, as all budgets have been set. President Peter Paone agreed to cancel the second meeting for now, but if new business should arise, council will put that meeting back in place.

The next scheduled meeting will take place at the beginning of January. Visit northcatasauqua.org/news for the set date, as well as information on the reorganization meeting to take place.
