Whitehall announces HOF inductees
The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee in the Whitehall-Coplay School District is proud to announce its Athletic Hall of Fame for the Class of 2024.
Four will be honored at this year’s ceremony, which will take place on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024 at Whitehall High School. The ceremony will be prior to the varsity boys basketball game between Parkland and Whitehall, at approximately 6:45 p.m.
The varsity game versus the Trojans will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Hall of Fame Class of 2024 includes:
Kayla Cunningham, Bob Hartman, Mike Lelko and Sean Szerencsits are this year’s inductees.
Kayla Cunningham, Class of 2013 was a multisport athlete who excelled in soccer and field hockey. Cunningham is District XI’s all-time leading goal scorer in girls soccer and scored over 100 goals in field hockey in her career. Cunningham led the Zephyr girls soccer team to a PIAA Championship appearance in the last season of spring girls soccer. She played Division 1 field hockey at Indiana University and Division 1 soccer at Temple University.
Whitehall Director of Athletics Bob Hartman is a 1990 graduate of Whitehall. Hartman was a multisport athlete and coach before becoming AD in 2002. Hartman coached six state place winners in wrestling. He has been the District XI Chairman since 2014 and PIAA Vice-President since 2020. He has earned multiple Athletic Director of the Year Awards. He has had a large leadership role in the many facility improvements at Whitehall.
Mike Lelko, Class of 1976 was a multisport athlete who excelled in cross country and track and field. He also had an outstanding tenure as head cross country coach at WHS. As an athlete Lelko holds the retired two mile record and participated in two PIAA cross country championships. As a coach, he coached seven PIAA qualifiers and two place winners in cross country and multiple middle- and long-distance runners in track and field.
Multisport athlete Sean Szerencsits, Class of 2002, made his mark as an athlete who excelled in golf and baseball. Szerensits closed out his high school golf career with a District XI Championship and PIAA second place finish. He would go on to golf at the University of Alabama and is now a golf professional in Florida. He played in numerous professional tours throughout his career after turning pro in 2006.
The Hall of Fame Committee is also soliciting additional nominees to be considered for the Whitehall Hall of Fame.
