Canes look to learn from experience

Liberty took their lumps on the mat last year with a young group of wrestlers that managed to finish 11-8 on the season.

With that experience gained from a year ago, head coach Brandon Hall looks to build off that this season.

“We had so many new kids out for the team last year with several of them seeing varsity time,” said Hall. “Those kids will look to expand from the offseason work we put in to find more success this upcoming season. While we have several holes in our lineup, we also have experience over the first five-to-six weight classes. We are excited about the number of student-athletes participating in our program. The implementation of an intramural program at the middle school level has been key to increasing participation.”

The Hurricanes projected lineup this year looks to be filled by Jasiah Pagan (107-113); Sergio Laracuenta (121-127); Jack Evans (127-139); Derek Cruz (127-139); Kam Abboud (133-145); Adriaan Deleon (139-152); Wesley Koch (152-172); Daniel Rivera (160-172); Dante Morrison (215-285); Levi Levy (215-285) and Seth Kolb (285).

Abboud took third at districts last year, while Pagan and Evans both finished sixth at districts. Those three, along with Morrison, look to be the core group that Hall is excited about their postseason potential. Newcomer Elijah Heimbach also figures to be in the mix.

“We have an exciting league schedule which should help prepare us for the postseason,” said Hall. “One team goal always is to qualify for districts.”

The Hurricanes open the season on December 7 against Allen and then head to the Penn Manor Tournament in Millersville on Dec. 8 and 9th.

Kam Abboud is back this season for the Liberty wrestling team.
