Petrocelli, Warsing compete in state doubles

The Parkland High School girls tennis team had a memorable 2023 season, completing the double by winning both the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 titles. The Trojans almost finished with an unbeaten year, going 20-1 overall and then 15-0 in the league, taking the regular season title along the way.

“Our Parkland girls had an amazing season,” said head coach Michael Hingston. “We finished 20-1 and won the EPC Conference and Tournament titles and the PIAA District 11 3A Championship. Our players rose to the occasion all season and performed their best when it mattered most.”

The Trojans’ season lasted until early November when the doubles team of sophomore Alexandria Warsing and senior Sophia Petrocelli competed in state doubles championship, finishing fourth overall.

The Parkland pair took the District 11 doubles title in October then won its first PIAA match 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 over the fourth place doubles team out of District 1. Warsing and Petrocelli followed that with a 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 win in the quarterfinals before falling to District 1 champs Michelle Lerman and Anya Zubenko (Council Rock South) 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 in the semifinals and then dropping their third-place match 7-6(5), 6-4 to the District 1 runners-up Kate Emmanuel and Jennifer Ho (Conestoga).

On the singles side of things Warsing won the EPC No. 1 singles title and advanced all the way to the championship match of 3A singles at districts before falling to repeat champ Helena Lynn of Liberty in the final.

Warsing and Sophia Petrocelli won the District 11 3A title 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, over a duo from Easton.

“Our seniors provided great leadership and served as excellent role models for our younger players,” Hingston said. “Vidhi Desai and Moriah Thomas won a number of doubles matches for us, and Sophia Petrocelli had an incredible season at third singles.

“We only had one senior in our top 11, so the future is bright. Our younger players gained valuable experience this season and will be battle tested going forward. It was nice to see the players accomplish so many great things in league and district play. I was especially proud of the way we handled the pressure that comes with high expectations.”

Hingston also recognized other standouts on the team for their successful seasons.

“Alexandria Warsing had an amazing sophomore season at No. 1 singles,” Hingston said. “She was the EPC Champion, won a silver medal in District singles and won the district doubles championship with Sophia Petrocelli. Alexandria and Sophia finished fourth in state doubles. Sophie Elijvich had an excellent season at No. 2 singles, and our doubles teams of Aarohi Vaze/Kiera Miles, Ali Silman/Kiana Miles and Riley Zangari/Belle Mattson performed admirably all season.”

Parkland’s quest for four consecutive district titles next season is in good hands with a lot of talent coming back for 2024.
