Catasauqua Area School Board bids farewell to three of its own

At the Nov. 14 Catasauqua Area School District Board of Education meeting, administration and board members said goodbye to three of their own.

Board President Duane Deitrich, Treasurer Don Panto and longtime member Carol Cunningham are leaving the board. Cunningham, who was unable to attend the meeting, was thanked for her 20 years of service on the board. Panto is departing after 14 years, and Deitrich served 12 years.

Superintendent Dr. Christina Lutz-Doemling recognized the three board members and shared her “heartfelt gratitude” for their “truly remarkable dedication and service” to the district. She noted the students have benefited from their leadership and support over the years.

The board members were gifted bamboo charcuterie boards, which served as a metaphor for the strong foundation they helped build in the district and for their years of service. They also received Rough Rider passes for entrance to district-sponsored events.

To prepare for his transition off the board, Panto resigned from his position as treasurer, effective Nov. 30. His term was set to end June 30, 2024, but he is vacating a few months early.

Board member Christy Cooper was unanimously approved to take on the role. She thanked her peers for the opportunity and said she has “big shoes to fill” in following Panto.

Panto said his time serving on the board has been a “very rewarding ride” and it was a pleasure serving the district.

He said he believes the centerpiece of any community is the school system, adding CASD has built a strong core for the area is serves. Deitrich echoed those sentiments, saying the school system is a pillar to provide support for the community.

Deitrich said his time on the board started once he finished working with the Boy Scouts. His own children went through the Catasauqua schools, and he felt almost obligated to give back and help keep the culture and traditions moving forward.

He noted this felt like the right time to step away, and he is confident in the remaining board members and administration to continue the success of the district.

“It’s time for someone else to have some fun,” he said.

All of the remaining board members and the district administration shared their appreciation for their years of the service and efforts in the district.

Board member Dale Hein joked Deitrich and Panto would be welcomed back if they decided to return to the board.

Business Manager Lindsay Wallace said they were part of the team that hired her, so they will always hold a special place in her heart.

Director of Student Activities Thomas Moll thanked Panto and Deitrich, not only for their service on the board but their efforts with the athletics and booster clubs.

Solicitor David Knerr took time to reflect on the noteworthy work and efforts from all three of the departing board members over the years.

In a fitting move, Panto made the motion, and Deitrich offered the second to adjourn their final meeting as school board members.
