Kids take early control vs. Catty
Northampton’s A.J. Slivka truly cherished his moment.
The senior scored on a three-yard run and later returned an interception 26 yards for a score to help the Konkrete Kids to a 47-7 victory over Catasauqua in the 100th meeting between the two teams on Thanksgiving morning. With the win, the Kids ended their season with a 10-3 record and they led the overall series, 63-33-4.
Slivka saw the significance behind his contributions.
“To be able to score twice in this historic game is truly something special,” said Slivka, who also saw time as a quarterback this year for the Kids. “I will definitely remember this game for years to come, and I am grateful for having been given the opportunity to play in this game.
“It’s crazy to think it is finally over now, but I couldn’t have asked for a better career. I love the guys I’ve been with, and I couldn’t be happier with these guys I’ve been with over the years. It’s truly an extended family, and I love these guys like they’re my brothers.”
Head coach John Toman watched his team staked itself to a 21-0 lead in the opening quarter and quickly gain control of the game.
Over his three years at the helm, Toman’s teams have compiled an overall 34-5 record. The Kids will lose six starters apiece on both sides of the ball, all of whom were integral in the program’s three consecutive East Penn Conference (EPC) North titles.
“After we got out to a 21-0 lead, the outcome was never in doubt after that,” said Toman. “These seniors compiled 34 wins and four of the five losses came to district champions.
“We’re very proud of their accomplishments, and they laid the foundation for the younger players to continue their winning ways. They will be missed, but I look forward to watching several of them playing on Saturdays.”
Senior running back Caden Henritzy, who ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns along with becoming the school’s all-time leading rusher, was happy to be fully healthy after an ankle injury slowed him the previous two weeks.
He also was appreciative of all of the opportunities as a Konkrete Kid.
“It felt great running the ball,” he said. “We got after Catty from the start. I felt like we overwhelmed them in every aspect of the game.
“We played our brand of football. Yeah, it’s crazy that it is over now. It goes quick. That would be the last time I would be playing with my lifelong friend, but it was a great way to end it.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better high school career that I had with my friends.”
