Hornets win 15th state title
Thirty-five.
And 15.
Two milestone numbers for the Emmaus field hockey program were hit in the past few weeks.
First came the 35th straight District 11 championship. Then Saturday came the 15th state championship when the Hornets beat Manheim Township 1-0 on the first goal of the season by sophomore Addison Povilaitis.
“I saw [the ball] was right over the line and I just did whatever I could to get it in the back of the net,” said Povilaitis of the game-winning goal with 9:33 remaining in the third quarter.
The goal came off something the coaches noticed earlier, seeing a consistent opening from a certain angle and junior Autumn Kernechel found the spot. She sent a hard pass toward the net from outside the circle and goalie Zoe Caloviras was able to bump it away from the goal, but a feeding frenzy erupted in front of the cage with Povilaitis getting the largest portion.
“I just stay calm and confident and go for everything,” said Povilaitis.
Besides being the 15th state title for the team, it is the third in just the last four seasons.
Emmaus was called for 16 penalty corners in the game, including seven in the first quarter. The Hornets killed off the corners, many of which came back-to-back. The Emmaus defense worked overtime throughout the game and senior goalkeeper Emma Cari made six saves in the game to make the lone goal stand up for a championship.
“I am so excited to finish my senior year like this, it just feels incredible,” said Cari, who has started in goal for the last three seasons and was the winning goalie for Emmaus in the 2021 PIAA championship.
In the 2021 state title game, the Hornets had Cari’s classmate Hailey Cook on the field with them. Cook lost her battle with leukemia over the summer and the Hornets were playing with her on their minds.
“This team has gone through a lot this year with losing a teammate,” said Cari. “Every game we played for her and that was really on our mind today that there is a senior who should be playing with us, and we didn’t have her.”
While Cari made six saves in the game, she deferred to the defenders in front of her who limited the number of opportunities that the Blue Streaks had to get shots on goal.
“My defense was fantastic,” said Cari. “That’s one big aspect we worked on at practice and we were finally able to pull through with it and we did a great job and did not let up at all,”
“Emma has grown so much from her state game as a sophomore to now her senior year,” said Emmaus head coach Sue Butz-Stavin. “She overcame her own adversities as a goalkeeper this season. She has been an awesome team captain and led this team this season. She was always there giving them good advice and we were very fortunate to have an individual like her.”
Kernechel was recently named to the list of the Top 150 juniors in the country by Max Field Hockey. She was the only Lehigh Valley junior to be named to the list, which is a prestigious listing of players from across the country.
“It was a great honor and so exciting to get that,” said Kernechel, who has a spot reserved for her at Ohio State. “I work for everything I get and I’m looking forward to next season and doing this all again.
“We are definitely going to have a younger team, but I am already excited about getting back here with my girls and all my friends and I’m so happy, but it’s sad that this is the last time I got to play with these seniors.”
The win improves Butz-Stavin’s coaching career record to 1067-84-35.
“I just want these kids to be successful and you just have to give them the right steps to be successful,” said Butz-Stavin. “I have to tell you that we have such wonderful associate coaches that work very hard and put in a lot of hours to make this team spin in the right direction. It’s not all about me. It’s all about the network that’s behind us, and also, without their families and booster clubs and especially my husband, there are a lot of us.”
