Good Shepherd Rehabilitation has announced the creation of The Fleming Center for Robotics in Rehabilitation, which will identify and test robotic and wearable technology to further provide leading-edge rehabilitation care.

The center’s creation, which will bring to Good Shepherd the only rehabilitation robotics center in the region, is made possible by a major gift from the Fleming Foundation of Zionsville.

The Fleming Foundation was created by the late businessman and philanthropist Richard Fleming and is now led by his daughter, Trinka Arnold.

Good Shepherd and the Fleming Foundation announced the new center at a Nov. 16 ceremony at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital, Center Valley. During the ceremony, Good Shepherd patients Ken Fairchild and Mikena Galarza demonstrated robotic exoskeleton technology utilized in patient care.

“The Fleming Center for Robotics in Rehabilitation will support investment in leading-edge technology that might have a significant impact on the quality of life for Good Shepherd’s patients,” said Good Shepherd Rehabilitation President and CEO Michael Spigel, PT, MHA.

“This generous gift also allows Good Shepherd to partner with companies that are developing technologies that can be applied within our rehabilitation network and beyond,” Spigel said.

“The Fleming Foundation is pleased to support Good Shepherd’s innovative use of technology in providing patients with the best possible treatment plans,” said Arnold.

Good Shepherd Rehabilitation has more than 250,000 outpatient visits and 1,000 inpatient admissions for adult and pediatric patients a year, including for stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, complex medical conditions, chronic pain and orthopedics.

Good Shepherd partners with Penn Medicine to provide rehabilitation and specialty services in the greater Philadelphia area and New Jersey through Good Shepherd Penn Partners.
