Historic season ends in state semi

The Parkland High School girls soccer team had its historic season and postseason run end just one win shy of competing for a state championship. The Trojans lost to District 1 champ Pennridge, 5-0, Tuesday night in the semifinal round at Upper Perkiomen High School.

The defeat snapped a 22-game win streak for Parkland and handed the Trojans their first loss of the season. They finished the 2023 campaign at 24-1-1 overall, while winning both the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 4A titles along the way.

In its latest game this past Tuesday, the Rams scored early and often and the Trojans just could not get anything going offensively, or keep Pennridge out of their net in walking off the field for the final time in 2023.

Parkland won two games in the state tournament prior to the semifinal defeat. The Trojans beat District One’s four seed, Council Rock South 2-0 in the First Round and then took down District One’s fifth seed, Lower Merion 2-0 in the quarterfinal round last Saturday at Central Bucks West High School.

Emma Hull scored the opener against CR South in the first half and then Aristea Gougoustamos tallied a second half goal for cushion. Ellie Kocher added an assist and Sophia Hallal (2) and Sophie Frank (3) both played in goal and combined for five saves. Gougoustamos then did all of the scoring in the 2-0 victory over Lower Merion to push her team to the semis.

Head coach Al Haddad and the Trojans program will graduate seven seniors from this year’s team, including Hallal, Frank, Gougoustamos, Lauren Ervin, Ella Amadio, Joanna Chou and Dani Marsteller.
