Steel Weekend & Steelworkers Reunion 2023
10 a.m. September 30 through 5 p.m. Oct. 1
The National Museum of Industrial History’s annual exploration of all things steel returns this Sept. 30 and October 1st! Guests can experience live demonstrations, hands-on youth activities, and expert lectures or catch up with old friends at the Steelworkers Reunion. Ongoing exhibits are Faces of Steel: Steel Weekend will honor the men and women who worked at Bethlehem Steel with a photo gallery shared via the outdoor screens at PBS39. The community is invited to submit photos of family members and friends who worked at Bethlehem Steel digitally at nmih.org/facesofsteel.
From the Archives: The National Museum of Industrial History presents recently unearthed photographs from the company’s corporate files in the NMIH Bethlehem Steel Archives. Taken from the 1950s through the plant’s closure by Bethlehem Steel’s in-house photography team, these images provide a rare glimpse into a storied company. Showing on screens between programming.
Hoover Mason Trestle Tour The HMT once supported busy standard and broad gauge railroad tracks for carrying the coke, limestone and iron ore needed to make the iron from the ore yard to the blast furnaces. Now a public walkway designed to be part museum, part community recreation resource, and part attraction, the trestle stands 46 feet tall and features almost 2,000 feet of walkway.
Ed Leskin Steel photographyLocal photographer turns his lens to Bethlehem Steel in this series of stunning black and white work. Transformed into an outdoor exhibit with large-scale banners hung throughout Foundry Park, guests can enjoy discovering photos as they explore the museum’s new outdoor exhibits.
Foundry Park events with NMIH staff and volunteers. Live hot riveting demonstrations, blacksmithing, steel forging with a 30-pound power hammer, and kid-friendly casting with the museum’s Foundry-in-a-Box program throughout each day (weather permitting).

Metal Health Iron Casting Workshop, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
NMIH will host a workshop led by Veteran and artist Jay Elias of Evolution Art Studios. Elias, a former United States Marine, served during the Gulf War era. Suffering from undiagnosed and untreated PTSD, he wound up on the wrong side of the law and eventually served a lengthy prison sentence. After many years of gradually declining mental health, he discovered the healing effects that art and the creative process can provide to promote both spiritual and emotional wellness. He created Evolution Art Studio to share this holistic approach to healing with other veterans and members of the community alike.
The workshop will introduce the process used to create three-dimensional sculptural forms in cast iron - patternmaking, mold-making and casting. The workshop includes instruction in the use of pattern materials. Most participants make their patterns from several premade forms. Workshop participants can customize their own design to these existing forms, making them unique, or build entirely from scratch using techniques demonstrated during the workshop. Free for veterans and $40 for general public. Pre-registration required here.

Located on 160-acres, between Hellertown and Bethlehem, the Coke plant employed over 500 people at the height of production. The Coke Ovens Division served as a pipeline for a variety of immigrants seeking employment at the Bethlehem Plant, supplementing employees from the surrounding Lehigh Valley. Join us for a panel discussion with former Coke Ovens Division employees about their experiences and memories of working in the plant.

Strategic Minerals & the Amazon: Excavating Bethlehem Steel’s History in Brazil. 2 p.m. There are many minerals needed in steel production including iron ore, limestone and manganese. Amid panic around shortages of manganese in the United States in the 1940s, the US government launched a series of policies and programs to gain access to this essential “strategic mineral.” As a direct response to these policies, from 1949-1984, the Bethlehem Steel Corporation jointly owned a subsidiary company that commenced the very first large-scale industrial mining operation in the Brazilian Amazon.
This presentation will unearth the company’s transnational history and show that, beyond being a steel-maker, the Bethlehem Steel Corporation was also a multinational mining company. https://www.nmih.org/event/steelweekend23/

Now a public walkway designed to be part museum, part community recreation resource, and part attraction, the trestle stands 46 feet tall and features almost 2,000 feet of walkway.
