Lower Macungie Library to host fall book sale Nov. 17 and 18

Lower Macungie Library hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The library will be closed Nov. 23-25 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

“Where Were You on 11/22/63?” will be held 10:30 a.m. Nov. 22. The discussion will focus on memories of the assassination of JFK.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club book for 10:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 6 is “The Elephant Whisperer” by Lawrence Anthony. The book for Jan. 3, 2024 is “The Reading List” by Sara Nisha Adams. The book club meets virtually.

The Friends of the Library will hold its fall book sale 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 17-18 in the Lower Macungie Library. Friends’ Preview Night is 5-7:30 p.m. Nov. 16. Join the Friends that night and purchase books before the weekend crowds. There will be a bag sale 2:30-4 p.m. Nov. 18. All proceeds from the sale benefit the library.

The 13th annual craft/vendor fair will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Lower Macungie Community Center, 3450 Brookside Road. Over 100 crafters and vendors will be participating. Food will be available 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is a free shuttle from the parking lot to the door.

Concordia Lutheran Church will hold a Thanksgiving Eve service 7 p.m. Nov. 22 with a pie festival immediately following.

The 95th Annual Sheeprock Trek and Thanksgiving Sunrise Service will leave promptly 5:45 a.m. Nov. 23 (yes, Thanksgiving morning) from the Macungie Volunteer Fire Department, 31 S. Walnut St.

Macungie Boy Scout Troop 71 will light the way up Macungie Mountain where there will be a brief Thanksgiving sunrise service. There will be a special Thanksgiving message by State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-187th.

Hot chocolate and doughnuts will be served at the end of the hike. The event is coordinated by the Macungie Historical Society. Hikers should be prepared with flashlights, gloves and hiking boots.

In the event of inclement weather, the sunrise service will be held at the Macungie Volunteer Fire Department starting at 5:45 a.m. For more information, call the Macungie Historical Society at 610-965-0372.

The Lower Macungie Tree Lighting Celebration will be held 6-8 p.m. Dec. 1 at the community center, 3450 Brookside Road. There will be live music, kids crafts, photo opportunities and refreshments. Lower Macungie Fire Department will partner with the township for this event.

The Lower Macungie Township Senior Citizens will have their Christmas dinner and final meeting of 2023 noon Dec. 5. Pre-purchased tickets are required. Volunteers are needed for various committees. Members are welcome to stay after the meeting to socialize and play games.

The Lower Macungie Historical Society will hold a holiday open house at the log house at the Wescosville Recreation Center 3-5 p.m. Dec. 10. Luminaria will light the pathway. There will be a fire in the hearth, homemade cookies, tours and harp music. The museum will be closed that day.

Lower Lehigh AARP will meet noon Dec. 14 for a Christmas party. Pre-purchased tickets are required. For more information, contact Dot at 610-967-3284.

The Lower Macungie Fire Department will hold its annual Santa Run in Alburtis and Lower Macungie Township Dec. 16 starting 2 p.m. The rain date is Dec. 17. Routes and estimated times will be posted; check www.firestation30.org or Facebook for updates.

The Alburtis Seniors will have a Christmas party noon Dec. 20 at Church of the Good Shepherd, 135 Quarry Road, Alburtis. Pre-purchased tickets are required. Each person should bring a wrapped $5 gift labeled for man or woman to the party. For more information, call Doris at 610-966-3653.

The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners and staff are holding the 18th annual Troop Support Program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won’t be home for the holidays.

To register a loved one in the holiday program, call 610-966-6924, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations will be accepted at the community center through Nov. 22. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center.

The community center will be collecting children’s new pajamas and books during the fall and holiday season. Items will be donated to local area children. A large receptacle is located in the lobby until Dec. 29.

Lower Macungie Township now offers indoor pickleball at the community center gymnasium. Advance registration is required.

Open gym is available at the community center. Residents must purchase an annual membership to use the gym.

Lower Macungie Township offers many programs for adults and children. For more information, go to http://www.lowermac.com/recreation/activities-programs/. Adult classes include baking, belly dance, yoga, karate, ballroom dance and tai chi. Youth classes include cooking, Kindermusik, Safe Sitter, tennis, pre-ballet and tot sports.

Yard waste center hours for November and December are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off. The center is located at 5536 Indian Creek Road, Macungie.

Leaf collection continues through Dec. 1. Leaves should be at the curb before 7 a.m. Mondays.
