Allen OKs spending for renovations to fire department

At the Oct. 24 meeting, Allen Township Board of Supervisors approved ordinance 2023-03, authorizing the issuance of a general obligation note from the township to First Northern Bank, for renovations to the fire department building.

The township plans to borrow $6,825,250 from the bank at a 5.9% interest rate spanning five years, giving the township a grand total of $8,825,250 for renovations.

Supervisor Gary Beh- ler struggled with the amount of interest the township would be paying the bank “for doing nothing.”

“It’s a hard pill to swallow,” Behler said. “That’s a lot of money for Allen Township.”

The township has applied for Northampton- Lehigh County, Monroe County and statewide Local Share Account grants to supplement some of the price.

The board approved the motion 4-1, with Beh- ler voting against.

According to Solicitor Lincoln Treadwell, the ordinance will be re-advertised.

Kim LaBrake, with D’Huy Engineering, gave supervisors a brief presentation outlining changes to the renovation plan. Only minor updates were made to the plan. Most notably, LaBrake said they are running between $500,000 to $750,000 under their original budget.

In other business, supervisors approved five waiver requests and gave preliminary/final approval for the Wawa development plan.

Supervisors next meet 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at the fire department building, 3530 Howertown Road.
