Parkland gets to volleyball title game

After the Parkland High School girls volleyball team came out on top in a thrilling, five-set match win over Central Catholic in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference final, the Trojans earned the number one seed in the District 11 4A playoffs and a bye in the first round.

The Trojans met the ninth seed Freedom in the quarterfinal round. The Patriots were a straight-set winner over eighth seed Pocono Mountain West in the first round.

Parkland defeated the Patriots by scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-11 last Thursday night at Parkland High School in the district quarterfinal round.

Alli Reimer led the attack with 11 kills and added two digs, one block and one service ace. Madi Siggins tallied eight kills, two digs and one block. Both Ava Best and Genda Avdijaj recorded seven kills, with the latter adding four digs and one block. Maggie Smith totaled 36 assists, five digs and three digs. Izzy Fekula contributed 14 digs, four aces and one assist, and Dani Gordon finished with 10 digs.

The Trojans advanced to the semifinal round and knocked off the fifth seed, Nazareth, last Tuesday night at Catasauqua High School, also in straight sets, by scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-16. Reimer had 12 kills, while Best tallied six and Siggins five. Smith recorded 29 assists, three aces, six kills and seven digs. Fekula added 21 digs and two aces.

“I think our team made some good adjustments tonight,” Krause said. “Alli Reimer has been very consistent with her attack. We had some challenges with areas of attack we felt we could have done a little more consistently early in the match. After the first set, we talked about the game plan, the girls adjusted and started clicking better. We improved our blocking, getting touches on a lot of their attacks to help the defenders. The girls are very focused and are really starting to click in all areas of the game.”

Parkland will now meet Liberty, a five-set winner over Southern Lehigh, in the championship match on Thursday night, back at Catasauqua High School.
