McCartney, EHS girls win league XC championship

The Emmaus girls cross country team capped another undefeated regular season with another title at last week’s East Penn Conference Championships.

Led by overall winner Mady McCartney, Emmaus finished with 33 points to beat second-place Easton (60) and Parkland (74) in third place.

McCartney, who finished second in last year’s EPC Championships, crossed the finish line last week in 19:08.50 with Pocono Mountain West’s Kaya Meler (19:34.3) more than 25 seconds behind.

“I just wanted to go out and give it my all and really focus on my strategies throughout the race and use all the training we did during the season to just really try my best in today’s race,” McCartney said after the race.

Emmaus had four runners finish in the top 10 and placed its entire top five within the top 17 places as Payton Campbell (5th, 20:28.5), Brooke Miller (6th, 20:32.7) and Addison Johnson (8th, 20:36.2) all finished less than 10 seconds of one another, with teammate Sophia Kovalski (17th, 21:06.0) rounding out the top five.

Emmaus runners Addison Kleinle (20th, 21:17.20), Isabella Scarlatta (25th, 21:35.0), Addison Shank (31st, 22:05.5), Grace Nosal (36th, 22:23.5) and Julie Murhpy-Peterson (42nd, 22:41.2) also competed in the girls league championship race, which included 101 runners.

The Emmaus boys team ran to third place at last week’s league championship meet, which was held Tuesday, Oct. 17 at DeSales University.

Ryan Fach led Emmaus with an 11th-place finish in 17:19.20. Conor Fisher was the next Hornet across the line, finishing 13th in 17:30.2. The rest of the team’s top five included Jared Petre (18th, 17:44.3), Connor Miller (19th, 17:47.9) and Tyler Finck (28th, 18:01.0).

Other Emmaus boys who competed in the championship race include Sean Daubert (35th, 18:19.2), Richard Will (37th, 18:22.3), Nate Smeltz (51st, 18:44.5), Adriano Clements (74th, 19:53.9) and Matthew Sirignano (80th, 20:08.3).

Nazareth’s Giovani Mastromonaco won the boys individual title in 16:10.8, followed by Parkland teammates Paul Abeln (16:22.0) and Ethan Willard (16:32.0).

Parkland took the team title with 32 points, followed by Easton (63) and Emmaus (89).

The runners will return to DeSales Wednesday to compete in the District 11 Class 3A Championships. The top two teams in each class qualify for the state championship meet, along with the top 10 runners who are not part of state-qualifying teams.
