Hornets win EPC title
Melea Weber scored all but one goal for the Emmaus High School Field Hockey team as it finished off an unbeaten year in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference with a championship, defeating the second seed, Easton, 5-0 last Saturday afternoon at Whitehall High School in the league title game.
It was the ninth straight conference crown for the Green Hornets (20-1 overall), whose only defeat on the year thus far came at the hands of Oak Knoll out of New Jersey. T
Easton and Emmaus met twice during the regular season and both games were decided by just three goals combined, Emmaus winning both (2-0 and 1-0).
Saturday’s EPC final was different as the Green Hornets found the back of the cage in every quarter, including twice in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
“Our kids are finally coming together,” said Emmaus head coach Sue Butz-Stavin. “We’re sharing the ball very well; we’re moving it. We’re trying to be a little bit more patient in setting up our attack. Plus, defensively, we’ve been a little bit more poised.”
Weber evenly distributed her four goals, scoring in each quarter. She scored with 4:27 left in the opening frame and then added her second with 3:44 to go until halftime. Haley Kavacky and Avery Burnett assisted the goals.
Weber then reached a hat trick with 8:30 left in the third on an assist by Emmy Horner, who tallied the team’s fifth goal. Weber later netted her fourth of the game just 0:34 into the final stanza off an assist by Gracie Huffer.
Emmaus had a 14-3 advantage in shots and 8-6 edge in penalty corners. Emma Cari finished with three saves. Butz-Stavin credited her defense and Cari for shutting out the Red Rovers.
“Easton, they have some very quality players. There are some that are very dangerous players,” Butz-Stavin said. “They all have very quick hands, their forwards. When they get a touch on the ball, it’s usually going to be something that’s on frame. [Goal keeper] Emma Cari did a great job for us and made some great saves today. I was proud of the whole team. They worked hard together, and they were very disciplined.”
To get to the final, Emmaus held on to beat Nazareth 1-0 in the semifinals last Thursday night on a goal by Horner.
The Green Hornets move on to the District 11 Class 3A tournament where they’ve won the last 34 titles. As the top seed they earned a bye in the quarterfinal round and will take on the winner of the four-five matchup between the Blue Eagles and Northampton. The Hornets will be back on the field in the semifinals next Tuesday night back at Whitehall. Emmaus has beaten Nazareth twice this year and also took down Northampton 9-0 back on Sept. 7.
