Batten earns D-11 medal
Salisbury’s Emily Batten is heading to the PIAA Cross Country Championships for the second time in two season of varsity running.
The Falcon sophomore took 10th place in last week’s District 11 Class A race to earn the second state medal of her high school career.
Batten ran the DeSales University course in 21:57.30 last week. She earned the right to compete in this weekend’s state championship race in Hershey. Last season Batten finished 40th in a girls state championship field of 257 runners.
Salisbury’s Soledad Lausch also competed at districts, finishing 57th.
The Falcon boys team finished 10th out of 13 teams in Class A last Wednesday. Sophomore Emerson Juhasz led the way with a 40th-place finish, followed by junior Cameron Kubinsky (44th), junior Gregory Tenzer (50th), senior Nolan Grejda (62nd) and sophomore Rafael Carpo (67th) to round out Salisbury’s top five.
Junior Joseph Tiao (69th) and Joshua Orach (80th) also competed at districts for the Falcons.
Minersville won the boys Class A team title with 50 points over Marian Catholic (83) to earn the two team berths into the state championships, which go to the top two teams in each class. Minersville’s Kolin Long won the boys Class A race in 17:07.67 with Marian’s Albin Perschauer (17:14.10) in second place.
In girls Class A, defending state champ Virginia Kraus (Moravian Academy) won by a two-minute margin over Notre Dame’s Katherine Koons (20:17.63). Kraus, a sophomore, ran last week’s district race in 18:10.61. Notre Dame won the team title with Moravian second.
In Class 2A, Wilson’s Avery Errico won the girls individual title in 20:24.24 with Saucon Valley’s Olivia Bortz in second place at 20:52.78. Saucon Valley won the girls team title with Tamaqua taking second place.
In 2A boys, Palmerton’s Connor Hibell (16:47.76) took first place with Central Catholic’s Duke Ebert (17:16.71) in second place. Central captured the boys team title with Tamaqua in second place.
Parkland took the Class 3A boys title with Easton in second place. Nazareth’s Giovanni Mastromona (16:00.01) won the boys individual title over 2022 winner Paul Abeln (16:23.66) of Parkland.
The Emmaus girls team won its fifth straight District 11 title by holding off Easton, 46-43. The Hornets’ Mady McCartney, this year’s East Penn Conference girls champ, won the girls individual title in 19:13.53. Freedom’s Avaline Fihlman finished second in 19:42.37.
The state championship meet will be run Saturday on the Hershey Parkview course.
