Dave Fry honored as music educator

Lehigh Valley multi-hyphenate Dave Fry was honored as an arts educator Oct. 7 on “Dave’s Day” in the City of Bethlehem, with a proclamation from Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds.

Fry, singer-songwriter, musician, teaching artist, radio broadcaster and author, was honored by the Teaching Artists of the Lehigh Valley and Teaching Artists of the Mid-Atlantic (TAMA) President Jennifer Ridgeway.

Lehigh Valley-based musicians, artists, playwrights and poets in attendance, including Craig Thatcher, Jacqline Wolf Tice, Anne Hills, Dick Boak, Rick Weaver, Bill George, Doug Roysdon and Marilyn Hazelton, lauded Fry during the event at Godfrey Daniels, Bethlehem.

Visual artist William Christine spoke about how he and Fry worked together during a “Climate Change Residency” in Bethlehem Area School District.

Fry, who co-founded Godfrey Daniels in 1976, is author of “Welcome to Godfrey Daniels: How a Small Folk Club Became a Legendary Venue for Musicians from Around The World.”

In addition to his solo career as a folk singer, Fry performed in the Shimerville Sheiks, Steppin’ Out!, Out on a Limb, Pavlov’s Dawgs, Murphy’s Trousers and RockRoots, the latter a school assembly ensemble.

Fry has recorded five albums, including his most recent, “Troubadour” (2018). He hosts “Sunday Folk” and “Live From Godfrey Daniels” on radio station WDIY.

He recently completed a three-year term as TAMA’s executive board secretary.
