Curtain Rises: Pennsylvania Playhouse remembering Chip Rohrbach in song

Three Lehigh Valley theaters are holding special events.

The Pennsylvania Playhouse is honoring one of its own with “Cherishing Chip: A Cabaret Celebration of Chip Rohrbach’s Legacy,” 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Bethlehem theater.

Touchstone Theatre of Bethlehem will hold a play reading from a prominent local playwright at 7 p.m. Nov. 4.

Allentown’s Munopco Music Theatre is hosting an interactive murder mystery dinner at 5 p.m. Nov. 5.

Pennsylvania Playhouse is remembering Rohrbach, who died in February, with a cabaret of more than 20 area singers and friends of Rohrbach who will perform songs from musicals in which Rohrbach was involved in Lehigh Valley community theater.

At the Playhouse where he is revered as “a tireless supporter of the arts, and a truly gifted artist,” Rohrbach was on the board of directors for many years, including as president and vice-president.

Rohrbach performed in musicals at MunOpCo Music Theatre in Allentown, where he was president of the board. His portrayal of Franz Liebkind in MunOpCo’s “The Producers” was memorable. He appeared on Reading’s Genesius Theatre stage in “Spamalot” and “Company.”

The Playhouse cabaret will include songs from “42nd Street,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Godspell,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Gypsy,” “Hello Dolly,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Mack and Mabel,” “Oklahoma!,” “Sister Act,” “South Pacific,” Spamalot,” “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “White Christmas” and “Xanadu.”

The show is directed by James A. Vivian and Taylor Van Kooten, who also perform. Music direction and accompaniment is by Lucille Kincaid.

Performaners include Rob Adams, Marlone Baker, Gary Boyer, Mickey Brown, Lana Brucker, John Corl, Dominick Dinzey, Nick Englesson, Alessandra Fanelli, Jen Fenstermacher, Leslie Knowlton, Kandy Kraemer, Andrw Maldonado, Kate Morgan, Rebecca Orth, Sebastian Paff, Jenna Seasholtz, Lori Sivick, Kait Stein and Lisa Suppan.

MunOpCo Murder Mystery:

MunOpCo Music Theatre is trying something a little different with “Bullets on Broadway,” an interactive murder mystery dinner. Guests can choose to be a participant or spectator.

In “Bullets on Broadway,” it’s opening night of “Murder in the First” on Broadway. The cast and crew are backstage when they discover the dead body of Broadway producer Jack Bialystock, who was shot in the back before the curtain rises.

Characters include Anita Part, a newcomer to the Broadway stage making her debut; seasoned performer Sienna Stealer; sleazy casting director Colin Back, and Megan Phan, a theater lover who wandered backstage.

Suspects in the murder include cast members and the audience.

Participants will be emailed character descriptions and are to dress in character.

Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory. Those in costume can participate in a costume contest.

Tickets for the event at Eastern Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company include salad, pasta, dessert and water. Adult beverages will be available for purchase at the bar for those age 21 and older. Attendees must be age 18 and older. Doors open at 4 p.m.

Touchstone play reading:

Touchstone Theatre will present a free reading of the play, “Entre LapidusY Masusoleus” (“Between Tombstones and Mausoleums”), on its South Bethlehem stage.

The play is written by Bethlehem’s José Díaz, who also wrote “8 X 8, Encounters,” and is presented in partnership between Touchstone Theatre’s Latinx Initiative and Panorama Cultural Latin News.

“Between Tombstones and Mausoleums” is set in a cemetery where there’s an encounter between the seven deadly sins, personified by La Catrina and Goodness. The candid conversation is intended to be revealing and irreverent to provide a different way to see reality.

Performers include Amparo Cordero, Ana María Hamilton, Ana Milena Campo, Chiqui Morales, Einis Dávila, Mildred Canelo, Sandra Vargas and Sasha I Rivera.

The play is performed in Spanish. A synopsis in English will be available. The play contains adult themes and strong language and is not suitable for children.
