The Allentown Band continues its 195th anniversary celebration with family and Veterans Day concerts.
The Family Concert “Wild Symphony” is 2 p.m. Nov. 4, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown. The concert will be presented for Lehigh Valley school students, 10 a.m. Nov. 2 and 3.
The annual “Salute the Troops” concert is 3 p.m. Nov. 12, Northeast Middle School, Bethlehem.
“One of the things of which I am most proud are the Allentown Band’s education outreach programs,” says Allentown Band Conductor Ronald Demkee.
“Each fall, up to 2,000 students from the region are invited to attend a concert designed for grades 4 to 8 at Miller Symphony Hall, and this year we feature Dan Brown’s delightfully descriptive ‘Wild Symphony’ with narrator, and images from the book projected onto a large screen above the band,” Demkee says.
Dan Brown, the son of a mathematics teacher and a church organist, is the author of numerous No. 1 best-selling novels, including “The Da Vinci Code.”
Images projected from Brown’s picture book “Wild Symphony” and accompanying music will allow the audience to travel through the trees and across the seas with Maestro Mouse and his friends. Children will meet a big blue whale and speedy cheetahs, tiny beetles and graceful swans. Each has a special secret to share.
“Music is a kind of storytelling and reveals a funny or interesting side of an animal’s personality,” says Brown.
“Music has always been a part of my life and my intent with ‘Wild Symphony’ is to provide a fun, fresh opportunity for families, parents, children and people of all ages to reconnect with the magical experience of live classical music,” Brown says.
Narration for the Nov. 2 and 3 performances is by Allentown Band’s Emile Guida.
The Nov. 4 performance features narration by Edward Pleasant, a professional storyteller, recording artist and internationally-recognized baritone of opera, stage and musical theater.
“We are all excited about the Allentown Band presenting the ‘Wild Symphony’ at Miller Symphony Hall,” says Diane Wittry, Allentown Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Conductor.
“The narrator, Edward Pleasant, is a good friend and he has performed in the Lehigh Valley many times. I know he is going to make this story come to life with his narration,” Wittry says.
In observance of Veterans Day, the Allentown Band will perform its annual “Salute the Troops” concert, this year at Northeast Middle School, Bethlehem.
“I really look forward for many reasons to this annual concert sponsored by the Morning Star Rotary Club of Bethlehem,” says Demkee.
“In addition to performing patriotic music in tribute to veterans and those serving in the Armed Forces, we invite members of the Northeast Middle School Band and Chorus to perform along with the band in a side-by-side experience,” Demkee says.
Concert selections include “Suite Francaise” by Darius Milhaud and “Midway March” by John Williams. Chet Brown, Vocal Instructor of the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, accompanies the band for “Neil Diamond’s ‘America’” Medley and Steve Reisteter’s arrangement of “The Golden Dream.”
The Northeast Middle School Band joins the Allentown Band in “United We Stand.” Robert W. Smith’s “The Greatest Generation” features narrator Emile Guida and “Who Are the Brave” performed with the Lehigh Valley Men’s Chorale.
The concert closes with the voices of the Northeast Middle School Select Chorus and the Lehigh Valley Men’s Chorale in Dick Hayman’s arrangement of “Armed Forces Salute” and John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars & Stripes Forever.”
Proceeds from the “Salute the Troops” concert benefit Victory House of the Lehigh Valley.
