Boys, girls soccer teams advance

Whitehall’s girls and boys soccer teams are leading parallel lives on the pitch with 4-0 District XI Class 3A semifinal wins captured last week at Catasauqua Middle School.

The top-seeded Zephyr girls blanked the fourth-seeded Lehighton Indians on Oct. 25.

Unlucky for Lehighton in the second minute of play, Whitehall scored on an own goal after an initial attempt to score was made by Zephyr forward Ava Wells and saved by Lehighton goalie Ciara Berhel (17 saves).

Collene Sommers’ shot to the far post put the Zephyrs ahead, 2-0, in the 12th minute, and Emma Potocnie found the back of the net for Whitehall’s third goal of the night.

“When we came out in the second half, we made some adjustments to try and fix what Whitehall was doing,” said Lehighton coach Carl Wolter. “We wanted to come out and be aggressive, and it just didn’t work in our favor.”

A penalty kick by Lehighton midfielder Karissa Moyer came close to ruining Whitehall’s shutout, but Zephyr goalie Samantha Kern (5 saves) batted the ball backward and it just missed falling in the goal.

Sommers scored her second goal of the night with 27:16 left on the clock, enough for the Zephyrs to advance to the district final, which will have been played against third-seeded Southern Lehigh on Nov. 1 past Press deadlines.

The top-seeded Zephyr boys shut out the fourth-seeded North Schuylkill Spartans on Oct. 26.

“Sometimes it’s not going your way, and then, the second half, we came out with the fire,” said Whitehall coach Christian Malone. “We were able to work it down the left side through (Reed) Felker, and between him, Mauricio (Vasquez), and Val (Lezcano), it opened everything up.”

The Zephyrs missed on an early penalty kick and took multiple shots in the first half but couldn’t find the back of the net.

“We made a couple of adjustments from the first to the second half, and it seemed to click,” Coach Malone said. “We moved Juan Estabon in and let him play a lot of the second half. They were able to get down this left side and play much better one-two touch soccer. The ball movement was much more crisp and quick, and that was able to get us more opportunities and finishes. The second half was some of our best soccer.”

Lezcano landed a free kick five minutes into the second half.

“After the first goal, I felt we were gonna have a lot of momentum,” he said. “I was pretty confident we were gonna keep burying some goals after the first one.”

Vasquez stepped up for the next goal on an assist by Benjiman Campbell.

“It bounced up to Benji, he hit it with his chest, and it went in front of me. It was a good feeling, seeing the ball lay down to me and hitting it upper 90,” said Vasquez. “[Coach Malone] told us to keep playing one-two passes, quick passes, and get a shot off when we see a chance. I’m feeling like we could win this; win the district final.”

Lezcano went one on one with North Schuylkill goalie Kaden Onuschak (12 saves) and scored Whitehall’s third goal with 7:51 remaining in the match.

“The ball ended up straight at my feet, I got a lucky touch and finished it,” Lezcano said.

Lezcano completed a hat trick four minutes later when the ball bounced at the end of the box and he hit it into the net, leading the Zephyrs to the district final, which will have been played against third-seeded Southern Lehigh on Nov. 1 past Press deadlines.

“We’re hoping to get some revenge and get a chip for Whitehall for the first time,” said Lezcano.
