BC hits reset before districts

It’s been a tale of two halves of the regular season for Bethlehem Catholic, but the Hawks now have a clean slate as they head into the opening week of the District 11 postseason.

After a 5-0 start, Becahi lost their last five of the season, including last week’s 24-14 defeat to Holy War rival Central Catholic.

It may not be how the Hawks want to enter this Friday’s road trip to Blue Mountain in the opening round of the District 11 4A tournament, but it doesn’t really matter to them either.

Being in the hunt for a district title is all that matters right now and first-year Hawks’ head coach Tyler Ward is just excited to have a fresh start to the season.

“It’s definitely a little bit of a reset button,” said Ward. “Four of the last five weeks we played pretty good football, so the message to the kids after these last five games is that we we’re playing good football. Things just haven’t gone our way at the end of some of these games.”

Blue Mountain (8-2) grabbed the second seed in 4A, as Becahi (5-5) is now the third seed heading up north. The other 4A semifinal includes Central Catholic (8-2) hosting Bangor (6-4) on Friday.

Playing against Blue Mountain always provides challenges with the lack of familiarity going against a Schuylkill League opponent. The Blue Eagles two losses this year have come to Southern Lehigh (9-1) and Northwestern (10-0), with the Solehi loss coming in blowout fashion, while they only lost by a touchdown to the Tigers.

Aside from that, Blue Mountain has won their last five straight games and feature dual threat quarterback Tyler Miller, who’s thrown for 827 yards and eight touchdowns, but also ran for 848 yards and 13 scores.

Running back Payton Fasnacht completes their offense, as he’s rushed for 1,109 yards and 11 touchdowns to complement their ground attack.

It’s fair to say, Becahi needs to win the line of scrimmage and force the Eagles to throw this week to come away with the win and a much anticipated rematch with Central Catholic in the district championship.

“Two biggest things is their quarterback and running back are both great athletes,” Ward said. “Defensively, they’re downhill and a fast team. We’re excited to go play them, but we’re just fired up that we’re playing football. We learned a lot of good lessons learned over these last five games. What you did to get here doesn’t really matter. It’s win or go home mode.”
