Way to Emmaus celebrates 35th anniversary

Way to Emmaus, a store specializing in religious books and gifts, is celebrating 35 years of service to the local community. Established by Mary Steslow in 1988, the business, located at 1325 Chestnut St., Emmaus, has remained consistently committed to its original mission of “Helping people live, share and celebrate their Christian faith.”

The current owner, Susan Kirby, worked in the store for three years before purchasing the business Jan. 1, 1993. She recalls that winter as particularly snowy, a situation which did not entice shoppers to leave the comfort of their homes. Business soon improved and a few years later when an adjoining commercial space was vacated, Kirby expanded and reorganized the store.

As well as expanding spatially, the business has also adapted to major technological advances. Initially, Kirby received information about available products on microfiche. (Google defines microfiche as “a flat piece of film containing microphotographs of the pages of a newspaper, catalog, or other document.”) Customers purchased music or cassette tapes and Kirby sent orders to distributors using a keyboard that connected to a telephone. The next wave of fax machines, DVDs and basic cellphones has since been pushed aside by smartphones, Wi-Fi and laptops and the next wave of technological newness is already on the horizon.

Adapting to rapid changes in business technology has not altered the focus of the business. As Kirby states, “The whole goal [is] helping people.” Consequently, the choice to celebrate the store’s 35th anniversary by collecting donations for a variety of local charities was fitting. The collections were successful because, according to Kirby, “Our customers are the most generous people.”

The festivities will close with a grand celebration focusing on appreciation to the business’s clientele. As presented in the Way to Emmaus 35th anniversary printout, from Nov. 1-4, customers are encouraged to “Bring back your Way to Emmaus Tote Bag and receive 20% off whatever fits in it.” New customers are also welcome to join the celebration.
