St. Mary’s holds Oktoberfest event

St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, also know as Annunciation Catholic Church, in Catasauqua held an energetic Oktoberfest Oct. 21 on the church grounds at 122 W. Union St.

The event ran full tilt with vendors, great food, music, refreshments, raffles and a variety of beer options, a staple at Oktoberfest events held around the world.

Kim Smith, church secretary, and David Domin, church volunteer, were the leaders of the hardworking team that labored to make and serve the food, ensuring a successful Oktoberfest. Other volunteers also helped make the event run smoothly.

The event offered a menu featuring an excellent selection of homemade German and American foods, such as smoked sausage, bratwurst, German potato salad, hamburgers and more.

German polka music was provided by Robbie Lawrence and the Steelworkers Polka Band. Visit the band’s Facebook page to book them to play at your next event.

First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association assisted with some financial support of the event.

Volunteer Carolyn Evans held the important role of biermeister as she cheerfully staffed the beer stand. Sales were brisk as the evening wore on.

Bill and Mary Miles, of Northampton, were deemed the “best dressed” in original German garb. Mary Miles noted they purchased their traditional clothes from a retailer located in Germany.

Church volunteers held a basket raffle and sold baked goods for the benefit of the church.

Oktoberfest originated in Germany Oct. 12, 1810, to celebrate the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The original Oktoberfest lasted about a week and ended with an exciting horse race.
