Edward Kenneth Whitby

Edward Kenneth Whitby, 84, died Oct. 18, 2023, after battling cancer. He was the husband of Judith (Umstead) Whitby for 61 years.

Born in Pottstown, he was a son of the late Helen (Achatz) Knopf and stepfather Stephen Knopf.

He was in the U.S. Army’s 319th Battalion for three years.

He graduated from the U.S. Army Defense Language Institute. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Russian in 1967 and a teaching certification at Penn State University. He earned a master’s degree in Russian from Lehigh University.

He started working as a teacher at Troxell Junior High in 1968. He was assistant principal at Springhouse Junior High when it opened in 1970. He retired in 2000 as an assistant principal at Parkland High School.

He was a 55-year member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Allentown.

He was a longtime volunteer with Allentown Area Ecumenical Food Bank.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Jen Garland and husband Pete, Steve and wife Tami and David and wife Colleen; eight grandchildren, Ben and wife Ali, Katie, Jon, Abby, Meghan, Talia, Wren and Elliott; and extended family members.

Services are private.
