Earned income tax for land preservation discussed

At the Oct. 19 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting, a lot line adjustment was made for a Lower Macungie mixed use development on North Krocks Road. This area is for the proposed Lehigh Valley Town Center with a bordering Catholic Diocese property which is a cemetery. The addresses are 647 and 517 N. Krocks Road.

This was approved by the commissioners.

A resident who lives on East Texas Boulevard expressed his frustration over a fence and retaining wall issue. These items, created by a neighbor, are located on his property. The resident has sought legal advice but is looking for a less costly solution. One question being asked was if there was a permit for the fence and wall.

President Brian Higgins said he will look into this situation and do what he can to provide an answer.

A drive-thru bank with a strip mall was proposed for Hamilton Square in the 5329-5373 block of Hamilton Boulevard. One concern is about traffic. The decision is before the zoning hearing board for reconsideration.

A discussion was held about the earned income tax for land preservation. It was said approximately $2 million is collected a year with $10 million collected over five years. Purchasing accounts for 50% with the remaining 50% used to improve the property. Of that 50%, 25% is used for maintenance.
