Bertram S. Winzer
Bertram S. “Bert” Winzer, 101, formerly of Macungie, died Oct. 24, 2023, at Complete Care at Lehigh Center, Lower Macungie Township. He was the husband of the late Joyce (Meeker) Winzer, who died in February 1981. Born in Emmaus, he was the son of the late Paul Winzer Jr. and Florence (Wood) Winzer.
He was a graduate of Emmaus High School, Class of 1940.
He was employed by the former Ritter & Yost Motor Car Co. of Allentown and Cliff Motors of Hellertown and retired from Mack Trucks.
He was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving in the Army with the First Special Service Force (Parachute Commando Group) and Co. 501 of the 101st Airborne Division. Medals received included the Congressional Medal of Honor, Canadian Medal and French Legion of Honor, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, two Presidential Citations as well as numerous campaign medals and citations. He was known for frequent speaking engagements at many schools, historical societies, veteran organizations and other events about his experiences in the service.
He was a member of St. James U.C.C. in Allentown and served as a deacon, an elder, a choir member and president of the Consistory.
He was a member of various organizations including the 1st Special Service Force Association (Life Member), Chapter 190 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, VFW Post 9264, historical societies of Lehigh, Emmaus and Macungie, World War II Roundtable, Liberty Bell Shrine and Lehigh Senior Citizens.
He participated in the bowling leagues for the United Church and Clubhouse 55 and served on the board for the Fairways at Brookside Council IV.
He is survived by a daughter, Pamela Deppe; son, Kim and his wife, Jacquelyn; grandchildren, Bonnie, Amy, Bryan, Michael; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters, Althea and Bertha; brothers, George and Clarence; companion of many years, Elaine Behringer and his special friend, Margaret Simon.
