Jusinski earns 12th place at EPC meet
Northampton harrier Liv Jusinski clinched the 12th and last medal awarded at the Eastern Pennsylvania Girls Cross Country Championships on Oct. 17 at DeSales University.
“She did well,” said Northampton coach Dan Benner. “She kind of overproduced today, which is good. She had a good season, some good races. She’s a good second-half racer.”
While some racers were negatively affected by the sudden downpour that lasted for much of the girls race, Jusinski appreciated the change in weather conditions.
“It made it cooler,” she said. “It cooled it down a lot, so it was actually a good thing, but there were a few spots where it was really muddy. There was one Stroudsburg girl who beat me last time, and I knew I needed to push the hills.”
Jusinski (20:51.8) placed in front of Stroudsburg’s Sydney Curry (20:57.20) and passed Easton’s Sidney Hutt (20:52.50) at the finish line for the last medal.
In the boys race, Braeden Lower placed 29th (18:09.50) for Northampton and first for the Konkrete Kids.
“Typically, I look for two Easton kids, but at the first mile, I was ahead of them, so I was feeling very good, and I saw some other kids who I previously beat in other races, so I was looking to try and stick with them,” Lower said. “I think I needed a better mentality to push up those hills. I was kind of not taking them as hard as I should’ve, trying to survive. That would’ve made a difference today. I beat the usual people I would beat in a typical race, but I think my time should have been better from falling off on that third mile. I did pass a kid from Parkland (Jorge Rinker) at the very last second.”
Nazareth’s Gio Mastromonaco won the boys race (16:10.80) and was crowned EPC champ.
Parkland’s Paul Abeln came in second (16:22.00) followed by Ethan Willard, also from Parkland (16:32.00), Freedom’s Dylan Boyle (16:32.60), Parkland’s Colin McGuigan (16:50.20) and teammate Jacob Barnes (16:51.50), Easton’s James Vigilanti (16:58.70), Allentown Central Catholic’s Duke Ebert (17:01.40), Easton’s Aaron Marcus (17:07.60) and teammate Evan Guydish (17:09.10), Emmaus’s Ryan Fach (17:19.20), and Nazareth’s JT Cunningham (17:25.30).
Emmaus’s Madelyn McCartney won the girls race (19:08.5) and was crowned EPC champ.
Pocono Mountain West’s Kaya Meler came in second (19:34.3) followed by Freedom’s Ava Fihlman (20:01.9), Parkland’s Lana Hurwitz (20:20.1), Emmaus’s Payton Campbell (20:28.5), teammate Brooke Miller (20:32.7), Parkland’s Gracie Trexler (20:34.5), Emmaus’s Addison Johnson (20:36.2), Easton’s Faith Belote (20:36.7), teammate Lama Mahmoud (20:45.0), and Freedom’s Anya Johns (20:51.0).
Girls team scores were Emmaus (33), Easton (60), Parkland (74), Freedom (137), Stroudsburg (163), Allentown Central Catholic (174), Nazareth (181), Northampton (194), Liberty (215), East Stroudsburg North (297), Whitehall (308).
Boys team scores were Parkland (32), Easton (63), Emmaus (89), Nazareth (89), Allentown Central Catholic (136), Freedom (159), East Stroudsburg North (236), Northampton (263), Stroudsburg (266),
Liberty (274), Bethlehem Catholic (294), Pocono Mountain East (311), Pleasant Valley (350), Pocono Mountain West (405), East Stroudsburg South (460), Whitehall (466).
“Both the boys and girls were 8-8,” Coach Benner said. “We struggled against some of the better teams, but we didn’t have a lot of depth. Our team was pretty small this year. It would be nice to have both teams in the top half of the field and have Liv run another good race (at districts). If she runs as well as she ran today, she’ll probably have a good shot at making the state meet.”
