FHS wins fourth-straight ahead of LHS showdown

Freedom has made a knack of peaking at the right time the last two seasons and it appears the Patriots are following that same trajectory this fall.

After a 1-4 start, Freedom recorded their fourth straight win last week in a 25-19 comeback at Emmaus.

The win clinched a district postseason berth for the Patriots (5-4) and pushed them ahead of Emmaus (5-4) for fourth place in the district power rankings heading into the final week of the regular season.

Noah Pierre ran for 168-yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner from six yards out with 51 seconds left in the game to give Freedom another boost of confidence as they get ready for their annual city showdown at BASD Stadium against Liberty Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

“The ability to be down two scores and respond says something about our kids on the road,” said head coach Jason Roeder. “We kept battling and stayed the course. We went into the game and just challenged our line and tight ends because that’s what we needed to do to win. It was just a matter of getting more of a push up front and we have guys that can break big runs.”

Freedom trailed 9-0 in the second quarter before getting on the scoreboard just before halftime when Chase Walker found Amare DuBoise (five catches, 94 yards) for a seven-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 9-6.

Pierre then broke things open in the third quarter with a 70-yard touchdown run to open the half, followed by a 36-yard TD score midway through the period.

Emmaus answered with a third quarter field goal and tied the game at 19 with a two-yard run from Reilly Bechtel with 3:58 to play before answering with Pierre’s touchdown late.

Now the focus is on Liberty (2-7) and winning the city championship this weekend, in what is always the biggest game of the regular season for Roeder and company.

Freedom has won the last four meetings in the series and seven of the last nine. Liberty still leads the all-time series 34-22.

“The city championship is huge to us,” said Roeder. “I think our kids understand what’s at stake. With this week there’s so much going on and we try to take things one day at a time. I just think you understand how many people you represent. It means so much to our school community and alumni. We just have to handle things the right way.”
