LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Bear 14th for girls

Catasauqua’s cross-country performance at the recent Colonial League meet at DeSales University wasn’t simply based on their overall performance, but instead it was view on a series of individual accomplishments.

“The league went very well for us,” said head coach Kyle Rusnock. “Everyone ran their fastest times, and they are peaking at the right time. The kids have worked hard all season, and you can see the results starting to pay off.

“We believe we can still do some more damage ahead.”

Alivia Bear, who has been the Roughies’ top finisher all season, ran the 5K course in a time of 21:28 and finished 14th overall. Bear, a senior, was a state qualifier last year.

Ava Smith has run well this season as well, and she has been among the top finishers. Smith was 22nd overall in a time of 21.59.

Following Bear and Smith was Uyen Li, who was 74th overall in a time of 27.11. Ni Thai was the Rough Riders’ next top finisher in 27:20, and she placed 76th. Delanie Popa round out the field in a time of 31:36 and took 90th place. The Roughies were eighth in the 11-team field.

Bear sees her season on the rise.

“I am really happy with how my season has been going,” she said. “I’ve beaten all of my personal bests, and I can see a large difference in my racing mentality now compared to the past two seasons. Overall, I just feel stronger.

“The second half of my race is what really determines what kind of a meet it is for me, and this year, my second halves have been really strong and my finishes have been great.

“I’ve been looking forward to the postseason races all year, so I’m excited to see what I can do.”

William Aguirre was the top boys’ placer, as he was 46th in a time of 20:39. Following Aguirre was Evan Reed, who was 48th in 20:45. Jonathan Rizzo followed in a time of 22:48 and placed 72nd.

Mikhail Hartranft finished in 23:28 and was 82nd. Rounding out the field were Jack Brubaker, 86th in 24:24; Gavin Hacker, 87th, 24:49, and Cassius Estronza, 91st, 28:31. The boys’ team finished last in the 11-team field.

Rusnock is confident his team could have improved on their times when they participated in the district meet back at DeSales Wednesday.

“I believe we have some girls who can make a difference at districts,” added Rusnock. “Alivia Bear and Ava Smith and William Aguirre and Evan Reed have been running well all season.

“This was a good prep for districts.”
