Emmaus defense slows Hurricanes
The Emmaus High School football team won its fourth straight game when it beat Liberty 21-6 Friday night at East Penn School District Stadium.
The Hornet defense held another opponent to single digits as the team has posted three shuts out this season while allowing less than 10 points in four of its eight games.
The Hurricanes put up 210 yards in the game and had 15 first downs, but they converted just one possession into points.
Emmaus (5-3) had 10 tackles for loss in the game, including six from senior lineman Mario Landino and three from Reilly Bechtel. Ben Mercado had the other tackle for loss. Landino led the team with 13 solo tackles in the game, while Bechtel had six and Mercado and Robert Edwards had four each. Edwards also forced a fumble.
Emmaus took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by Daniel Duggan.
A two-yard run from quarterback Josiah Williams put Emmaus head 14-0 in the third quarter.
The Hurricanes (2-6) got on the board in the fourth quarter with a touchdown that made it a one-score game. The Hornets answered with a 70-yard Riley Guiffre touchdown run that capped the scoring.
Guiffre ran for 140 yards on 13 carries as Emmaus put up 191 rushing yards against Liberty. Duggan ran for 21 yards on four carries and caught three passes for 30 yards in the game.
Williams completed eight of 15 passes for 85 yards to reach 1,000 passing yards for the season. He also ran for 20 yards against the Hurricanes.
The Hornets will now host another Bethlehem team as Freedom visits EPSD Stadium Friday night.
As they seem to do most seasons, the Patriots are playing their best late in the season. After a 1-4 start, they have won three straight games, including wins over Bethlehem Catholic and Easton over the past two weeks.
Friday night could see a battle of two of the East Penn Conference’s best defenses as Freedom has allowed just six points over its last three games while scoring 39. Both teams have shut out three opponents this year.
The Patriots are led offensively by running back Noah Pierre (771 yards on 147 carries, 6 TD) and quarterback Chase Walker (79-for-167, 1,085 yards, 8 TD, 5 INT). Shacre Colwell (30 receptions, 391 yards, 3TD) and Justin Peluso (14 receptions, 284 yards, 3 TD) are Walker’s main targets, along with Jayden Colon (17 receptions, 171 yards, 1 TD).
Peluso leads the defense with 50 tackles this season.
The Hornets head into this week’s game in fourth place in the District 11 Class 6A rankings. A win in either of their last two games would likely clinch their place in the district playoffs, which go to the top eight teams. They still have a chance to secure top-four seeding and a first-round home game, but could need two wins to do that.
Emmaus finishes the season Oct. 27 at unbeaten Parkland.
