Alumni recall Liberty/Freedom split of ‘68

As the incoming 1967-68 senior class at Liberty HS anticipated the school year, its number was reduced by over 380 students in order to populate the opening of the new Freedom HS. Over 560 remained at Liberty. Boundaries were created in the Bethlehem Area School District to achieve this, thereby creating the initial graduating class at Freedom.

After spending 10th and 11th grades together as classmates, the Liberty-Freedom class of 1968 has held joint reunions every five years. Their reunion on Sept. 15-16 marked the 55th anniversary of their graduations.

An informal Friday night gathering at the Brew Works, was followed by a Saturday event at the Meadows. About 150 graduates and guests enjoyed dinner, dancing, rekindling memories and conversations updating each other on their lives. They also remembered over 160 classmates who are deceased.

Some no longer live in the Bethlehem area and they traveled from elsewhere in Pennsylvania or out of state. The years melted away quickly, and familiar faces reconnected with smiles and updates.

A 12-person reunion committee made the arrangements.
