Joanna Maurer

Joanna (Bennetch) Maurer, 83, of Orefield, died Oct. 9, 2023, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

She was the wife of the late Carl M. Maurer for 41 years until his death.

Born Feb. 17, 1940, in Bethlehem, she was the daughter of the late Leonard Muhlenberg and Alice (Brader) Bennetch.

She was a 1958 graduate of Liberty High School.

She spent her summers at Mount Gretna, enjoying tennis, hiking, and swimming at the lake.

She worked for the Western Electric Company until she met her future husband.

After marrying in 1969, she was mother to Sue and Cliff.

She maintained her passions for tennis, bridge, needlepoint and quilting, and served as an adult leader for the Girl Scout Troop at the Jordan United Church of Christ, South Whitehall, for many years.

Also an active member of Union Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, she served on multiple committees.

Starting in 1989, she was either the primary or secondary care giver for her father-in-law (Carl W.), father, mother-in-law (Louise), Aunt Betty, mother; and then through 10 years of progressive cancer, husband, Carl, until his death in 2011.

She devoted the better part of two decades providing love, emotional support, navigating the health care system, and ensuring the best quality of life possible for her elder relatives and her husband through their final days.

Her survivors include a daughter Suzanne E. Morton, wife of Richard Wall, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; son Clifford M. Maurer and his wife, Cindy, of Oxnard Shores, Calif.; grandchildren Madison (Morton) Ortiz (Dustin), Spencer Morton (Britney), Georgia (Morton) Heart (Rami); and great grandchildren Issac, Tessa, Colin Daniel, Zara and Zahee.

Her memorial service will be 11 a.m. Nov. 4 in Heintzelman Funeral Home Inc., Schnecksville.

Family and friends may pay their respects 10-11 a.m., Saturday in the funeral home.

Interment will follow the service at Union Church Cemetery, Neffs.
