Patriots honor their senior harriers

Freedom’s cross country team celebrated Senior Night to honor Ava Fihlman and Ryan Parkin after the last meet of the regular season on Oct. 10 at Nazareth.

“These are two I’ll definitely really miss,” said Freedom coach Bob Thear. “They’re super kids, they always do anything I ask of them, always do their best. It’s great that Ava’s had a lot of success, and Ryan’s a nice runner too, but regardless of how fast or where they’re at, I’d coach them forever. They make it easy to coach.”

Adding to the celebration were victories for the Patriot girls over city rivals Liberty (23-34) and Bethlehem Catholic (15-50), as well as Northampton (24-33) and Nazareth (28-29), finishing the season with a record of 8-8.

“We haven’t done that since 2014,” Thear said. “The girls lost eight in a row, and the boys lost five of the last six, but we swept them both today.”

Fihlman (19:26) and teammate Anya Johns (19:27) placed one, two. Easton’s Faith Belote was third (19:51), Northampton’s Liv Jusinski came in fourth (19:55), Easton’s Lena Mahmoud placed fifth (20:04), and Nazareth’s Kylie Karavitch was sixth (20:08).

Easton’s runners won the next eight places, seven through 14.

Freedom’s Taylor Vidumsky placed 17th (21:21), and Liberty’s Emma Haas placed 18th (21:31), regaining her top finish for the Hurricane girls.

“I wanted to [set a personal record] for myself, my family, all my friends, my teammates, and I feel like this course was a great course to do it,” said Haas. “I got boxed in at the beginning, so I got really nervous, but eventually I worked my way up. I’ve had an injury all season, and it started bugging me today, but I was like, I’m not gonna let that stop me, and I’m gonna keep going.”

Becahi’s Aliyah Brame came in 20th (21:33), and Freedom’s Amelia Holden was 21st (21:45).

Liberty’s girls team defeated Northampton, 27-29.
