FaRannte honored, Cieslak hired

Hellertown Borough Council convened for their regular meeting on Sept. 18, addressing several routine matters in a generally uneventful session.

Mayor David Heintzelman reminded the community of the upcoming Halloween parade scheduled for Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. This year’s parade marshal will be Emily FaRannte, a Saucon Valley Middle School student whose battle against non-Hodgkins lymphoma has been a source of inspiration. Additionally, the parade will honor three centennial residents: Al Greiger, William Diehl and Jack Rice.

Council Vice President Matt Marcincin shared updates, including the appointment of Emily Cieslak as the incoming Hellertown Area Library director in October. Cieslak, who was approved by the library’s board of trustees, holds a Master of Library Science degree from Kutztown University and is a native of Bethlehem.

Marcincin also raised concerns about the Dewey Fire Company’s need for volunteers, emphasizing that assistance is required across various organizational roles, not limited to firefighters.

Looking ahead to the borough’s 2024 budget hearings in October, Councilor Andrew Hughes presented a summary of findings from his newly formed Finance Committee. Hughes recommended the implementation of a plan to scrutinize capital expenditures more closely.

Borough Manager Cathy Hartranft announced the commencement of the third round of Hometown Hero Banners, recognizing Hellertonians who have served in the US Armed Forces. Interested individuals can access application details online.

Hartranft also disclosed that the borough’s recyclables collection contract is set to expire at the end of the year. Proposals for contract durations ranging from one to five years are being sought, with J.P. Mascaro & Sons serving as the current provider.
