The Oct. 10 Saucon Valley School Board covered various important topics, ranging from the mundane to the concerning.
The meeting began on a typical note, with an annual presentation from Northampton Community College President Dr. David Ruth. Ruth discussed the college’s recent enrollment increases and new programs, outlining its strategic plans and highlighting its commitment to enhancing the student experience and expanding regional partnerships.
Next, in a development aimed at benefiting district parents, Superintendent Jaime Vlasaty introduced “Parents Square,” a new communication system to streamline interactions between the school, parents, and affiliated organizations. The district plans to implement the platform gradually over the next two years.
In an update on previously approved expenditures, Facilities Manager James Deegan provided insights into ongoing projects. The district is having substantial improvements made to the roof, HVAC units and windows across its three buildings.
However, the meeting began to turn more contentious during the latter half as board Vice President Dr. Shamim Pakzad raised several financial questions, addressing legal fees and invoices, legal settlements, and the role of insurance companies in legal cases. Pakzad also expressed concern over avoiding the spread of inaccurate information within the community.
Lastly, in an alarming accusation, district resident Ronald Mules expressed concerns about a male teacher at the middle school who he said had been accused of allegedly inappropriate touching of female students.
Mules, who said he received information from district parents, also raised concerns about rumors regarding the involvement of the teachers’ union in supporting the accused teacher during the investigation. The board did not immediately respond to his claims.
