BETHLEHEM social calendar October 18

HI NEIGHBORS: First Pres-Bethlehem presents “Sleep and Dreams” during its Hi Neighbors: Hot Topics for Inquisitive Adults series. Offered by First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, the popular speakers program, “Hi Neighbors,” continues its fall series of programs on Monday, Oct. 23, with a special session about sleeping and dreaming. The speaker, Dr. Micah Sadigh, is a professor of psychology at Cedar Crest College, as well as the author of several books, including publishing about sleep disorders.

All programs are offered at the church building, 2344 Center St., Bethlehem and are open to all (no fee or pre-registration). Each session begins at 9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall with a social time. The presentations begin at 10 a.m.

MARINE CORPS CEREMONY: The Bethlehem and Lehigh Valley Marine Corps League detachments and the local Inspector-Instructor staff of India Battery in Allentown will be celebrating the 248th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps in the annual ceremony at Cedar Beach Park, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. The program lasts approximately 30 minutes and includes a ceremony, color guard, bugle rendition of the Marine Corps Hymn, a soloist singing the national anthem, etc. A cake cutting ceremony honoring the oldest and youngest Marines will be held afterward. Cedar Beach Park is located at 24th and Hamilton streets in Allentown.

DISABILITY RESOURCE FAIR: State Rep. Jeanne McNeill will host her annual Disability and Mental Health Resource Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 20 at the Suburban North Family YMCA, located at 880 Walnut St. in Catasauqua. Vendors will be on hand with information on programs and services that help adults and children with mental health issues and physical disabilities. SPIRIT OF COURAGE AWARDS: The annual Valley Preferred Spirit of Courage award celebration Oct. 17 at DeSales University will recognize 21 individuals with Spirit of Courage awards for risking their lives to save someone from a fire. Two of the awards will be presented posthumously to families of firefighters who died in the line of duty. In addition, a Partners in Prevention award will be presented to a Pottsville fire chief whose elementary school education saved a young girl, and the Phoenix award will be presented to a burn survivor who gives back to the burn community that saved her. Two special awards this year include recognition of a beloved burn nurse who passed away suddenly, and 53 fire, police and EMS organizations that responded to the explosion at the R.M. Palmer chocolate factory. All of the honorees have demonstrated exceptional bravery, determination and selflessness.

GARDEN CLUB MEETING: The Bethlehem Garden Club will meet tomorrow, Oct. 19. The meeting will be held at the Moravian Church, 3730 Jacksonville Road Bethlehem. The meeting will start at 1 p.m. Doors open at 12:30. The speaker will be Frederic Buse. Fred will introduce us to Phenology (the intricate seasonal timing of biological events in plant and animal life. That is, their flowering, leafing, hibernation, reproduction and migration). He is a Master Gardener for Penn State Extension.
