Hornets erase early Easton lead in 42-14 win
The Emmaus football team is in the midst of its longest winning streak of the 2023 season after beating Easton 42-14 last Friday night at Cottingham Stadium.
The Hornets have now won three straight games to improve to 4-3 after a 1-3 start to the season.
Easton took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter Friday night when Logan Braido intercepted a Josiah Williams pass and took it 15 yards for a touchdown.
Emmaus responded with 35 unanswered points over the next two quarters to take a commanding lead into the final stanza.
Jasiyah Banks scored twice on one-yard touchdown runs in the second quarter to get the Hornets in front 14-6 at halftime.
Williams connected with John Wassel on an 18-yard touchdown pass for the first of three third-quarter touchdowns. Banks ran in from 11 yards for another score. Cael Kratzer caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Williams to put the Hornets in front 35-6 through three quarters.
The Rovers made it 35-14 when quarterback Cole Ordway found Jasir Frutchey for an 8-yard touchdown.
Emmaus answered, capping its final scoring drive with a 5-yard Williams run.
Williams completed 10 of 18 passes in the game for 179 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Banks ran the ball seven times for 15 yards, but three of those totes went for touchdowns. Williams (12 carries, 59 yards) led the Hornet running game, while Riley Guiffre (8 carries, 46 yards) also had a productive game.
Kratzer caught four passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, while Wassel added a pair of catches for 21 yards and a score.
Will Buck hit all six extra points for Emmaus.
The Emmaus defense held the Rovers to just 57 rushing yards and 83 yards through the air in the game. The Hornets amassed 179 passing yards and 153 yards on the ground.
The win moves Emmaus into fourth place in the District 2/4/11 subregional rankings. If the Hornets can remain in the top four through the next three weeks, they will earn the right to host a first-round playoff game.
This Friday night Emmaus hosts a Liberty team that will be trying to break a five-game losing streak. The Hurricanes started the season 2-0 with wins over Dieruff and East Stroudsburg North. Since then they’ve lost to Parkland, Bethlehem Catholic, Nazareth, Easton and Central Catholic.
Last week Liberty gave Central Catholic a fight before falling 23-20.
