Girls soccer team has wealth of goal scorers
There is definitely strength in numbers.
That is playing out on the girls soccer team that is now 16-1 overall and 12-0 in the Colonial League.
The team is graced with four players who have all scored multiple goals and five players with double figures in assists. Having multiple players that opposing defenses must keep an eye on makes it difficult for teams to shut off scoring by looking to shut down just one star player.
Cammy Fitch took the team lead in goals when she scored her 17th against Palisades (9-3-0 Colonial, 13-5-0) on Monday and Brook Balliet is close behind with 16 goals. Sophia Schaffer has 12 goals, just ahead of Katie Brensinger, who has 11.
Fitch leads the team with 15 assists, while Brensinger picked up her 13th assist of the season Monday. Schaffer and Kherington Yezik both have 11 and Paige Bissell has 10 this season.
While Fitch and Brensinger are seniors, Balliet and Bissell are both juniors and Schaffer and Yezik are both freshmen players, who have quickly joined the core of the team.
In the win over Palisades, which was their final Colonial League game of the season, the Tigers had goals from Fitch, Syenna Flores, Sophia Schaffer, and Juliet Benvin. Yezik, Bissell, Brensinger, and Kiersten Klein assisted on the goals. Northwestern wraps up their regular season schedule at home against Fleetwood.
The Colonial League playoffs begin on Monday, but Northwestern can enjoy a couple extra days off.
The Tigers go into the tournament as the top seed and will receive a bye in the opening round where they will play the winner of the matchup between Palmerton (9-3-0, 12-5-0) and Southern Lehigh (8-4-0-, 10-7-1) on Wednesday in the semifinal round.
Northwestern will have to wait until the dust settles on the league playoffs to determine their seeding for the district tournament, but they are currently the number-two seed in Class 2A, with Allentown Central Catholic (14-0-1 EPC, 15-0-1 overall) holding the top spot.
