EHS golfers compete in D-11 Championship
The Emmaus golf season wrapped up last week at the District 11 Championships, held Monday at the Steel Club in Hellertown.
Hornet senior Noah Schurman led the way for his team, tying for ninth place in the 30-player boys field with an 8-over par 80.
Schurman, who has been the team’s top player the past two seasons, took a triple bogey 7 on his first hole and had to battle back from there.
He played the rest of the front nine at 2-over par (six pars, two bogeys) to take the turn at 41.
After taking another bogey on the 10th, Schurman parred four straight holes and then birdied the 15th. He was among the top five and within position to earn a second straight trip to the state championships before bogeys on the final three holes dropped him back.
While he came up one shot short of making a playoff to earn another trip to states, Schurman showed a lot of determination to shake off the rough start and pull himself back into contention.
“I think it says everything about him,” said Emmaus head coach Patrick Birns. “He’ll be kicking himself. That [triple bogey] really hurt him. Anybody else that’s the end of the round. He battled back and kept in it, kept grinding.
Birns said a lipped out putt caused the bogey on the 17th hole and a drive into a divot made parring the last hole difficult. But after hitting his approach shot long, Schurman hit the pin with his par chip.
“At the end he was still going for it,” said Birns.
Schurman plans to continue his career in college but hasn’t decided where.
“This is going to be tough for him to swallow, but hes got better golf to come,” said Birns “He had a great year. He really was a leader for us on and off the course. We were a pretty young team even though we had five seniors, the next group up was sophomores and a freshman, and he led them.
“When I couldn’t get out to play a practice round I knew it was fine because he was helping the freshman and sophomore and junior get through this course yesterday. His leadership is really impeccable.”
Freshman Evan Walters shot 88 at districts to finish in a tie for 19th place, while teammate Kyan DeLong, a sophomore, shot 95 in the event. Junior Mya Schutz played in the 10-player Class 3A girls field and finished eighth with a 99.
Pocono Mountain Easts’ Evan Murphy won this year’s District 11 Class 3A boys title, shooting even-par 72 and finishing with a comfortable five-stroke margin over Hunter Probst (Stroudsburg) and Zachary Miller (Nazareth), who tied for second.
Southern Lehigh, which had four players finish in the top 10, took the team title last Tuesday with Nazareth finishing second.
Nazareth’s Allie Tarreto won the 3A girls title with an 85, one shot better than Northampton’s Camryn Hoff.
In Class 2A, Panther Valley’s Drew Kokinda shot 79 to finish four strokes ahead of Moravian Academy’s Collin Schreiber for the title. Schreiber and the Lions won the team title with Northwestern Lehigh second. Moravian Academy’s Mara Dubacher won the girls 2A title with a 78. She finished 13 shots ahead of Marla Freiwald (Blue Mountain).
