Curtain Rises: Oh, cabaret! at Civic Theatre, Star of the Day

Two area theater groups are offering cabaret series in addition to their theatrical productions.
514 Below, the resident cabaret company of Civic Theatre of Allentown, presents “The Magic of Menken,” a concert celebration of the music of Alan Menken, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15, Main Stage, Nineteenth Street Theatre, Allentown.
Star of the Day Productions presents “Ghouls Night Out with the Divas,” a revue featuring songs of the witches, villains and vixens of stage and screen, 7 p.m. Oct. 27, 28, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Emmaus.
Menken is a composer, pianist, music director and record producer, best-known for his scores and songs for Walt Disney animated feature films. He received Oscars for his scores for “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and “Pocahontas.”
Menken is also known for his work in musical theater for Broadway. Some are based on his Disney films, but other stage hits include “Little Shop of Horrors,” “A Christmas Carol” and “Sister Act.” He is one of 18 people to be dubbed an “EGOT” for having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
Civic is staging Menken’s “The Little Mermaid” on the same stage through Oct. 22. The cabaret will feature a performance by the show’s cast.
“The Magic of Menken” includes more than 20 Civic company members. There will be lesser-known songs from “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Hercules,” “Enchanted” and “A Christmas Carol.”
The cabaret is emceed by Dan Becker, a Disney parks historian and vlogger. It is directed and music-directed by Nina Elias, Melisa Klausner and Rebecca Pieper.
Performers include Becker, Elias, Klausner, Pieper, Rob Adams, Cal Corcoran, Ryan Doncsecz, Katy Hartzell, Alex Kleinschmidt, Caitlin McDermott, Brian McKay, Emma Milander, Gianna Neal, Noelle Nilo, Anthony Rizzuto, Talia Sites, Julia Urich, Kate Varley, Malana Wilson and Lori Sivick.
Civic presented “Singing through Our Eras: Celebrating the Songs That Shaped Us,” Sept. 27, as part of its 514 Below series in Theatre 514. The revue included Ryan Doncsecz, Nina Elias, Steve Molloy, Cheryl Moritz and Julia Urich.

“Ghouls Night Out with The Divas! & Friends” is part of Star of the Day’s Coffeehouse Cabaret Series.
The Halloween-themed revue is hosted by Lord Damian MacDonovan, “a 300-plus-year-old Scottish Vampire.”
MacDonovan is the vampire alter-ego of Benjamin Ruth, who has appeared at haunted houses and hosted horror movie marathons.
Performers are Kirsten Almeida, Lauren Erb, Alyssa Steiner, Julisa Trinidad, Kyleigh Vicoso, Courtney Bodnar, Dara Connelly, Krista Metter, Maggie Toner and Carol Vazquez.
A portion of proceeds from performances benefits Parents’ Medical Rights Group, a nonprofit formed by a group of greater Lehigh Valley parents to support parents’ rights to partner with doctors, clinicians, hospitals and insurers to decide best-practices care for children. Almeida said the group “is important to Star of the Day as it directly affects one of our alumni families.”
