Trojans rout Whitehall

The Parkland High School football team found success on both sides of the ball and its well-rounded performance led to a 36-7 victory over Whitehall last Friday night at Parkland School District Stadium in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South Division game.

The win kept the Trojans undefeated at 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the South Division. They are the lone unbeaten team in the conference after previously undefeated Bethlehem Catholic suffered its first loss of the regular season last weekend against Emmaus.

Parkland has been the class of the conference and even of District 11, having previously beaten undefeated teams duing the first five weeks of the season, including two state ranked teams in Nazareth and Central Catholic in two of the last three weeks. The Trojans took down Freedom week two, followed by Liberty, the Blue Eagles, the Vikings and last weekend, the Zephyrs (4-2, 3-2).

Against Whitehall, Parkland put a full 48 minutes together by both the offense and defense. The offensive unit, which has scored at least 31 points throughout the first six weeks, was led by the conference’s leading rusher, Trey Tremba, who finished with 174 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Luke Spang threw for two scores and added 149 yards through the air, completing long touchdown passes to Connor Johns and Jendel Sanchez.

“It definitely helps the team when you have a dual-threat at quarterback like Spang,” said Johns. “It’s a testament to how many weapons we truly have. We can just pick our poison with who we want to go to, and our passing game really opens up holes for Trey in the running game.”

The Parkland defense came up big in defending Whitehall’s start quarterback Trey Dogmanits, who is tied for the school record in touchdown passes so far. The Trojans allowed just a fourth-quarter touchdown when the mercy rule was already in effect. Sanchez also came away with an interception.

“When we play a full 48 minutes and play hard every snap on both sides of the football, our team is hard to beat,” said assistant coach Mike Facchiano. “The guys really played their hearts out tonight and really showed the coaching staff the effort that we preach every day at practice.”

Tremba had runs of 15 and 61 yards in scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. A 43-yard connection from Spang to Sanchez in the second quarter, followed by a run by Spang on a two-point conversion put Parkland ahead 22-0 at halftime. Tremba then added his third score of the night, an 80-yard run to open the third quarter, just 0:13 in. Johns then had a 36-yard reception for a score from Spang exactly 1:00 later to round out the scoring for the Trojans.

Parkland now takes on winless Allen back at J. Birney Crum Stadium this Friday night, before hosting the Golden Hawks the following weekend.
